Kuehne+Nagel Paves the Way for Electric Trucks with Innovative Carbon Insetting Solution

(IN BRIEF) Kuehne+Nagel has introduced a new carbon insetting solution for electric vehicles (EVs), becoming the first logistics service provider to offer this solution, which was previously limited to low-emission fuels. This initiative aligns with Kuehne+Nagel’s Roadmap 2026 Living ESG cornerstone, focusing on decarbonization and sustainability. The Book & Claim insetting solution allows customers to claim carbon reductions from EVs when their goods cannot be physically transported on these vehicles due to factors like limited charging infrastructure or driving range. It aims to support the adoption of EVs and reduce the cost premium associated with sustainable road transport.

(PRESS RELEASE) SCHINDELLEGI, 3-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Leading the way in sustainable logistics, Kuehne+Nagel (SWX: KNIN), one of the world’s leading logistics companies, is proud to announce the launch of its groundbreaking Book & Claim insetting solution for electric vehicles. This pioneering move establishes Kuehne+Nagel as the first logistics service provider to extend the benefits of insetting solutions beyond low-emission fuels. Aligned with the Kuehne+Nagel Roadmap 2026, this initiative accelerates the decarbonization of the logistics industry.

Kuehne+Nagel has long recognized the strategic importance of developing Book & Claim insetting solutions for road freight. In October, the company successfully introduced an insetting solution for HVO (Hydrotreated Vegetable Oil), and now, it extends its commitment to sustainability with electric vehicles. The innovative solution has undergone rigorous testing and validation in collaboration with esteemed external partners.

For customers utilizing Kuehne+Nagel’s road transport services, the introduction of this solution represents a significant milestone. It enables them to ‘claim’ the carbon reductions achieved by electric trucks when circumstances prevent the physical transportation of their goods using these vehicles. Common reasons for this limitation include inadequate charging infrastructure, limited driving range, and payload constraints. Kuehne+Nagel’s new solution effectively bridges these challenges, thereby supporting the wider adoption of electric trucks in the logistics sector.

Hansjörg Rodi, Member of the Management Board at Kuehne+Nagel International AG, responsible for Road Logistics, emphasizes the company’s commitment to sustainability, stating,  “We see battery-Electric Vehicles (BEVs) as the future to reduce emissions in road freight. Carbon insetting supports the scale-up of low-emission solutions like BEVs and helps to reduce the premium that customers pay for these solutions, thereby supporting the decarbonisation of road transport,”

Currently, Kuehne+Nagel’s Book & Claim offer includes only the company’s owned BEVs, ensuring complete control and transparency over the data used in emissions calculations. However, the company has ambitious plans to expand the solution to encompass BEVs operated by its partners, facilitating their electrification efforts. Rodi acknowledges the challenges involved in this expansion, stating, “Including carriers in our solution necessitates complex developments in accounting methodology. Nevertheless, it’s a crucial step towards helping smaller carriers finance their transition to electric trucks. This is our next priority.”

Kuehne+Nagel’s launch of the Book & Claim insetting solution for electric vehicles marks a significant leap forward in the company’s commitment to sustainability and its dedication to supporting the transformation of the logistics industry toward a greener, more environmentally responsible future.
