Kuehne+Nagel Achieves 100% Renewable Electricity in Global Contract Logistics Warehouses

(IN BRIEF) Kuehne+Nagel has published its seventh Sustainability Report, detailing the Group’s ESG performance in 2022 and its commitment to sustainable practices. Additionally, Kuehne+Nagel has signed an agreement to purchase 10,500 hectares of timberland in the US Northeast, aiming to preserve an economically and ecologically sustainable forest portfolio while generating CO2 certificates to offset its own emissions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SCHINDELLEGI, 31-Mar-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Kuehne+Nagel (SWX: KNIN), one of the world’s leading logistics companies, announces that it has released its seventh Sustainability Report, highlighting the Group’s progress in ESG (Environment, Social, Governance) performance during 2022. The report emphasizes the important role of ESG in the implementation of the Group’s recently unveiled strategy, with “Living ESG” being one of the four cornerstones of Roadmap 2026.

As part of its commitment to science-based targets, Kuehne+Nagel invested in maritime biofuels and sustainable aviation fuels (SAF) during 2022 to reduce Scope 3 emissions. By the end of December 2022, the company had purchased approximately 7% of the total production of SAF globally, supporting customers such as Novo Nordisk and Lenovo in decarbonising their supply chains.

Kuehne+Nagel achieved its goal of 100% renewable electricity across all Contract Logistics warehouses worldwide in 2022, thanks to the purchase of renewable energy certificates and an increase in on-site electricity production using photovoltaic systems.

In road transportation, Kuehne+Nagel is increasingly transitioning to electric vehicles (EV). For instance, the company’s French subsidiary acquired 23 distribution trucks for domestic groupage transportation services. By the end of 2030, Kuehne+Nagel aims to equip 60% of its fleet with EVs.

Moreover, Kuehne+Nagel has signed an agreement to purchase 10,500 hectares of timberland in the US Northeast, aiming to preserve an economically and ecologically sustainable forest portfolio. The company will work with Salm-Schulenburg, Atlanta, on sustainable forest management, including the generation of CO2 certificates to support Kuehne+Nagel’s ambition to compensate for its own emissions in parallel with low-carbon and reduction technologies.

Kuehne+Nagel is cooperating with The Conservation Fund to limit the use and protect the timberland’s conservation purposes. The transaction is still subject to customary closing conditions. Dr. Marc Pfeffer, Member of the Management Board of Kuehne+Nagel International AG, responsible for Governance, states: “The sustainable forest management with Salm-Schulenburg, Atlanta, will also include the generation of CO2 certificates to support Kuehne+Nagel’s ambition to compensate its own emissions in parallel with low carbon and reduction technologies going forward.”
