RINA and Eni Collaborate on Green Maritime Initiatives for Energy Transition

(IN BRIEF) RINA and Eni have signed an agreement to collaborate on initiatives aimed at the energy transition and decarbonization of their operations, with a focus on maritime transport. The partnership will explore the use of HVO biofuel produced by Eni, as well as other energy carriers like hydrogen and ammonia derived from renewable or waste materials. They will also work on developing the logistics and value chain for these energy carriers and adopting certified methods to calculate emissions benefits. Additionally, the collaboration will consider experiments and pilot projects for on-board CO2 emissions capture. The partnership aims to drive sustainability in the maritime sector and contribute to a greener future.

(PRESS RELEASE) MILAN, 29-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Eni S.p.A. (BIT: ENI), an Italian multinational energy company with focus on innovation, efficiency and accessibility for all, announces that it has entered into a partnership with RINA, a global leader in inspection, certification, and engineering consultancy, to collaborate on initiatives aimed at driving the energy transition and decarbonization of their operations, with a specific focus on maritime transport. Leveraging their respective expertise, RINA and Eni aim to develop solutions that will contribute to a sustainable future.

The agreement primarily centers around the utilization of HVO (Hydrogenated Vegetable Oil) biofuel produced by Eni in its Venice and Gela bio-refineries. Additionally, the partnership explores the potential of other energy carriers such as “blue” or “green” hydrogen and ammonia derived from biogenic, renewable, or waste materials that do not compete with the food chain. These energy carriers will play a crucial role in the naval sector’s quest for decarbonization. The collaboration also includes initiatives to enhance the logistics and value chain of these new energy carriers, as well as the adoption of certified methods for accurately calculating the emissions reductions they offer.

Eni and RINA will further explore experiments and pilot projects related to on-board CO2 emissions capture, emphasizing their commitment to advancing sustainability goals within the maritime sector.

By combining their resources, Eni and RINA are poised to drive significant progress in the energy transition, decarbonization, and sustainability of maritime transport.

Ugo Salerno, Chairman and CEO of RINA, said: «Cooperation between companies is the way forward towards the common goal of decarbonising industry and transport. By sharing know-how and experience with Eni, we will contribute to developing innovative energy supply models. Our collaboration will begin by focusing on the maritime sector, a diversified and hard-to-abate industry that can draw on initiatives already adopted by other industrial segments to decarbonise operations».

Giuseppe Ricci, Chief Operating Officer for Energy Evolution at Eni, said: «Eni and Rina can make a significant contribution to the decarbonisation of maritime transport with their wealth of expertise and technological capabilities. Following a technology-agnostic approach, we are exploring multiple solutions. Thanks to this agreement, we will have the opportunity to study and develop them in the short, medium and long term, with the objective of making maritime transport more sustainable and meeting the needs of shipowners and logistics operators».
