(PRESS RELEASE) HELSINKI, 29-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Metso, a leading provider of sustainable technologies and solutions for the mining industry, celebrated the groundbreaking ceremony of its first-ever polymer filter plate factory in Irapuato, Mexico. The new facility, representing an investment of approximately EUR 28 million, will enhance Metso’s production capabilities and support customers’ sustainability goals.

In response to the growing global demand for high-quality polymer filter plates for mining filter presses, Metso decided to increase its investment by an additional EUR 9 million in early 2023, resulting in a 30% increase in the factory’s planned production capacity. The company aims to meet the rising needs of its mining customers while ensuring shorter lead times and reduced transportation distances, particularly in the Americas.

Tomas Hakala, Senior Vice President of Beneficiation, Dewatering, and Hydrometallurgy Services at Metso, emphasized the significance of the investment, stating, “The demand for high-quality filters, filter spares, and services is on the rise. The investment is an important step towards further strengthening Metso’s strong position in mining concentrate and tailings filtration solutions.”

Production of the first filter plates is expected to commence in the second half of 2024, with full production capacity anticipated in the first half of 2025. Once operational, the factory will have the capacity to serve Metso’s full filter portfolio.

The new factory, situated on a lot spanning over 18,000 square meters, will feature a factory and warehouse area exceeding 8,500 square meters. Its location in Irapuato, alongside Metso’s rubber, Poly-Met, and screening media factories, will create synergies and operational efficiency.

Metso currently employs approximately 730 workers in production, sales, and field service in Mexico. In early 2023, the company received recognition as a Great Place to Work in Mexico. Alfredo Monreal, Vice President of Sales and Service for Mexico and Central America, highlighted the positive impact of the new factory on employment, stating, “We are very proud to be able to offer new jobs and career opportunities and thus strengthen Metso’s presence and reputation as an attractive workplace in Mexico. The new factory will employ around 70 skilled workers.”

Metso’s filtration portfolio consists of 15 different filter types and comprehensive services for various applications, with over 80% of their filters falling under the Planet Positive portfolio, known for their efficiency in water recovery and reuse. The company has conducted more than 14,000 filtration tests and delivered over 5,000 filters worldwide. Many of their filters are sold under the Larox® product name, along with the Metso corporate branding.
