Breaking New Ground: Technip Energies and Versalis Partner for Sustainable Plastic Recycling Solutions

(IN BRIEF) Technip Energies and Versalis, the chemical subsidiary of Eni, have partnered to integrate their advanced recycling technologies, Hoop®, Pure.rOilTM, and Pure.rGasTM. This collaboration aims to create an innovative platform for chemical recycling of plastic waste, forming an endless recycling loop. The project combines Versalis’ Hoop® technology for recovering mixed plastic waste with Technip Energies’ purification technologies and expertise in ethylene furnace and steam cracker design. The goal is to produce virgin polymers indistinguishable from those derived from fossil fuels, driving a circular economy and reducing the carbon footprint in the polymer value chain.

(PRESS RELEASE) PARIS/ SAN DONATO MILANESE (MILAN), 28-Aug-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Eni S.p.A. (BIT: ENI), an Italian multinational energy company with focus on innovation, efficiency and accessibility for all, announces that its chemical subsidiary Versalis together with Technip Energies are leading the charge in the energy transition, through groundbreaking partnership. The two industry giants have entered into a strategic agreement to integrate Versalis’ Hoop® technology with Technip Energies’ Pure.rOilTM and Pure.rGasTM purification technologies. Together, they aim to pioneer an advanced chemical recycling platform dedicated to addressing plastic waste.

The collaborative effort between these industry frontrunners seeks to establish an endlessly sustainable loop for plastic recycling. By harnessing their combined expertise, the project aims to yield fresh virgin polymers capable of serving diverse applications. These polymers will be indistinguishable from their counterparts derived from fossil resources, heralding a new era of eco-friendly plastic production.

Versalis brings to the table its Hoop® technology, a cutting-edge pyrolysis process engineered to reclaim mixed plastic waste with exceptional efficiency, recovery rates, and flexibility in handling various feedstocks. Complementing this, Technip Energies contributes its mastery of ethylene furnace and steam cracker design, boasting a global footprint of over 700 steam crackers operating under its proprietary license. Furthermore, Technip Energies introduces its exclusive purification technologies, Pure.rGasTM and Pure.rOilTM, ensuring a seamless integration with both new and existing crackers, thereby enhancing safety, reliability, and efficiency.

The integrated prowess of Versalis and Technip Energies marks a significant stride towards promoting a circular economy and reducing the carbon footprint within the polymer value chain. This collaboration embodies a visionary step forward in the drive towards a more sustainable future.

Marco Villa, Chief Operating Officer of Technip Energies, stated: “We are pleased to join forces with Versalis to bring our combined technologies for plastic waste recycling to commercialization. This alliance will help strengthen Versalis’ and T.EN’s leadership in the transformation of traditional basic chemicals and polymers into sustainable, decarbonized products and facilitate the transition to the circular economy.”

Adriano Alfani, Chief Executive Officer of Versalis, stated: “We believe the partnership model is a very effective accelerator for growth, turning synergies into the strength we need to make our industry more and more sustainable. This partnership with Technip Energies, which combines the two companies’ innovative technologies in chemical recycling and significant industrial experience, will allow us to accelerate the deployment of concrete and effective solutions to tackle plastic waste, to be applied wherever needed worldwide.”
