(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 23-Oct-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY (STO: AFRY) a European leader in engineering, design, and advisory services, with a global reach, is pleased to announce the signing of a significant contract with Worldwide PMC Sdn. Bhd. (WPMC). This partnership marks a crucial milestone in the pursuit of sustainable municipal waste management solutions in Kuala Selangor, Malaysia.

In an era where sustainable practices are paramount, state-of-the-art waste-to-energy (WtE) facilities have emerged as indispensable contributors to our journey towards a sustainable future. These facilities play a pivotal role in harnessing the value of residual waste, effectively converting it into energy, and minimizing the environmental impact. The forthcoming WtE plant in Malaysia will substantially reduce landfill waste and, consequently, mitigate the release of harmful methane emissions associated with landfills.

Named the Jeram WtE project, this ambitious initiative will encompass the construction of a cutting-edge facility with an impressive daily capacity of approximately 2,700 tons. Moreover, it is poised to generate up to 52 MW of electrical power for export to the national grid.

Worldwide PMC Sdn. Bhd. (WPMC), a subsidiary of Worldwide Holdings Bhd. (WHB), a distinguished investment holding company and a prominent leader in environmental management services, has taken charge of overseeing the construction of this groundbreaking project. The Jeram WtE facility represents a pivotal component within WHB’s Integrated Solid Waste Management Centre, which will also feature a composting plant, material recovery facility, anaerobic digester, and a dedicated research and development facility.

AFRY’s scope of work will encompass a comprehensive suite of services, including project management, engineering review, and rigorous oversight of construction, erection, commissioning, and testing activities. With AFRY’s expert guidance, the Jeram WtE project is primed to set new benchmarks for sustainable waste management practices in the region.

“The WHB project is a flagship waste-to-energy initiative in Malaysia representing modern, efficient and environmentally friendly management of municipal waste, considering that otherwise the waste would be landfilled. We are honoured to play such a crucial technical role in its construction. After assisting WHB during the development phase, we are pleased to continue in the construction phase of this WtE project, which will enable Malaysia to optimise its municipal waste management”, says Petteri Härkki, AFRY’s Regional Director for Asia.
