(PRESS RELEASE) VANTAA, 16-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Deutsche Post DHL Group (ETR: DPW), a German multinational package delivery and supply chain management company, announces that DHL Express Finland has unveiled its plans for a new logistics center at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport, solidifying its commitment to enhancing international air express transportation. The construction of the facility, representing an investment of approximately €100 million for the entire lease period, underscores DHL Express’ dedication to meeting the growing shipment volumes in Finland, fueled by the surge in international e-commerce and increasing demand across customer segments.

Scheduled to be completed in the second half of 2025, the new gateway will serve as the central hub for all incoming and outgoing Express shipments in Finland. The strategically located logistics center will provide direct airside access, enabling efficient handling of DHL aircraft parked on the apron directly from the building.

. “The flexibility, reliability, speed and global coverage of our services are critical to our customers’ supply chain planning. Over the years, we have systematically invested in and strengthened our operations in Finland. With this project, we will significantly increase our processing capacity, ensuring potential for future growth. The new state-of-the-art gateway facility will enhance our ability to continue to create reliable and fast transport services that support the competitiveness of Finnish export and import companies,” says Oktay Nuri, Managing Director DHL Express Finland.

“The new facility will be about 16,000 gross square meters in size, more than double the size of our current gateway in Vantaa. The automated sorting system can handle approximately 6,500 items per hour. 90 direct loading bays enable efficient sorting of shipments directly from the conveyor to the delivery vans. All bays will be equipped with charging stations for e-vehicles, supporting our goal to electrify our entire pick-up and delivery fleet within a few years”, explains Janne Appel, Operations Director DHL Express Finland.

The development of the new facility aligns with Deutsche Post DHL Group’s commitment to achieving net-zero emissions by 2050. As part of the sustainability roadmap, the Helsinki Express gateway will be designed as a carbon-neutral facility. The building will incorporate geothermal heating, photovoltaic systems for electricity production, energy-efficient materials and equipment, LED lighting, and an advanced building management system. These features contribute to a greener infrastructure and create a spacious and functional working environment for employees, prioritizing safety and environmental considerations.

With an expected workforce of around 150 employees, the new gateway has the potential for further job growth in the coming years. DHL Express Finland’s head office will be situated in separate office premises, ensuring efficient operations and facilitating seamless connectivity.

The construction of the Helsinki gateway is part of DHL Express’ comprehensive network infrastructure improvement program. Simultaneously, similar gateway facilities are being constructed in Munich, and a Nordic Express hub was recently inaugurated in Copenhagen. In Finland, DHL Express completed a cutting-edge 5,000 square meter Express terminal in Pirkkala in 2019.

DHL Express Finland looks forward to the completion of the new gateway, further strengthening its operational capabilities, and reinforcing its position as a leading provider of international express services in Finland.
