Kapsch TrafficCom Implements Innovative Traffic Light Priority for Madrid’s Bus Rapid Transit

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom’s Spanish subsidiary has successfully implemented a sophisticated traffic light priority system for Madrid’s first Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system, connecting key neighborhoods and reducing travel times. The system uses on-board beacons and traffic light controllers to grant buses automatic green light priority, enhancing efficiency and reliability. Kapsch TrafficCom’s collaboration with the Madrid City Council aims to reduce congestion, pollution, and improve urban mobility. The company specializes in transportation solutions, including tolling, traffic management, and demand management, contributing to sustainable mobility worldwide.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA/ MADRID, 7-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch Group (VIE: KTCG), a leader in innovative transportation solutions, announces that Kapsch TrafficCom’s Spanish subsidiary recently accomplished a significant milestone by installing cutting-edge mobility and safety elements for Madrid’s inaugural Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) system. The city introduced its first BRT line to connect two crucial neighborhoods, dramatically reducing travel times from 50 minutes to under 30 minutes. This new transit line establishes a crucial link between the rapidly growing Valdebebas neighborhood and the Hospital Ramon y Cajal in northern Madrid, covering a total distance of 31 kilometers, with 19 kilometers dedicated to exclusive lanes.

The centerpiece of this advancement is the newly implemented traffic light priority system, designed to facilitate smoother and more efficient bus operations. This system grants buses automatic green light priority, significantly reducing the number of stops and enhancing the reliability of bus routes. The process relies on on-board beacons that detect when a vehicle crosses loops embedded in the pavement, triggering a signal to nearby traffic lights. As part of this extensive project, Kapsch TrafficCom has provided and installed 62 traffic light controllers utilizing its cutting-edge EcoTrafiX™ platform. Additionally, ten CCTV cameras and a robust communications network were supplied and integrated to ensure seamless operation.

Furthermore, the project required the installation of over 12 kilometers of fiber optic cables. These cables facilitate the transmission of crucial information and images from the newly deployed cameras to the Mobility Management Centre, which oversees the proper functioning of the system.

Kapsch TrafficCom’s involvement extends beyond this transformative BRT project. The company has been actively collaborating with the Madrid City Council on various initiatives aimed at mitigating traffic congestion, reducing pollution, minimizing public health risks, and enhancing the overall road user experience. These efforts include strategies to expedite travel times, contributing to improved urban mobility and sustainability.

Javier Aguirre, CEO of Kapsch TrafficCom’s Spanish subsidiary, emphasized the importance of this collaboration with the Madrid City Council, stating, “The concentration of population in the suburbs requires public institutions to offer new, more sustainable mobility models that respond to the daily needs of citizens. Our collaboration with the Madrid City Council highlights this priority, putting our knowledge and technology at the service of a new urban mobility.”
