Sustainable Transit in Basque: Kapsch TrafficCom’s Traffic Signal Priority Systems Improve Public Transport in Vitoria-Gasteiz

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch TrafficCom has successfully implemented traffic signal priority systems for public transport in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city in the Basque region with approximately 250,000 inhabitants. This initiative aims to enhance sustainable mobility in the city. Kapsch TrafficCom’s technology is being used in two key projects: for intelligent electric buses (BEI) on a major transportation route and the extension of a tram line in the city. The implementation includes upgrades to existing traffic light systems, new installations, and dedicated light signal systems for electric buses. These improvements have led to increased bus frequency and reduced travel times, benefiting around 120,000 potential passengers. Additionally, the tram extension enhances connectivity between different areas of the city, promoting sustainable mobility. Kapsch TrafficCom is a global provider of transportation solutions for sustainable mobility, with successful projects in over 50 countries.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA/ BILBAO, 24-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch Group (VIE: KTCG), a leader in innovative transportation solutions, announces that Kapsch TrafficCom, a global leader in sustainable transportation solutions, has successfully implemented traffic signal priority systems for public transport in Vitoria-Gasteiz, a city with approximately 250,000 inhabitants in the Basque region. This initiative underscores Kapsch TrafficCom’s dedication to promoting sustainable and eco-friendly mobility.

Kapsch TrafficCom’s advanced technology plays a pivotal role in two significant projects within Vitoria-Gasteiz. Firstly, it has been deployed for the intelligent electric buses (Bus Eléctrico Inteligente, BEI) on a major transportation route within the city. Additionally, Kapsch TrafficCom has contributed to the extension of a tram line that enhances accessibility to the eastern part of Vitoria-Gasteiz.

For the BEI project, Kapsch TrafficCom has supplied the necessary traffic light systems for 61 intersections along the bus route. This encompasses upgrading existing traffic light systems, installing new systems, and creating a dedicated light signal system exclusively for the fully electric intelligent buses. As a result of these traffic signal priority systems, the bus frequency has been improved from 10 to 7 minutes, reducing travel time for approximately 120,000 potential passengers by 25%.

Furthermore, Kapsch TrafficCom has facilitated the extension of the Vitoria-Gasteiz tram to Salburua by establishing traffic signal priority systems at 15 intersections along the tram’s route. This extension, in conjunction with another supported by Kapsch TrafficCom between the Angoulême train station and the university campus, enhances connectivity between the eastern area and the city center. This prioritization of public transport is instrumental in fostering more sustainable mobility for Vitoria-Gasteiz residents.

Kapsch TrafficCom is a globally recognized provider of transportation solutions that promote sustainable mobility, with successful projects spanning more than 50 countries. Their innovative solutions encompass tolling, tolling services, traffic management, and demand management, contributing to a congestion-free and environmentally friendly world.

As a one-stop-shop solutions provider, Kapsch TrafficCom covers the entire value chain for its customers, from components and design to implementation and system operation. Headquartered in Vienna, the company has subsidiaries and branches in over 25 countries and is listed on the Prime Market segment of the Vienna Stock Exchange (ticker symbol: KTCG).
