Kapsch TrafficCom’s Upgraded WIM Solution Achieves Accuracy Milestone on Austrian Highways

(IN BRIEF) Kapsch, a leading transportation solutions provider, has developed advanced Weigh in Motion (WIM) systems to address the challenges posed by overweight and overloaded vehicles on roads. These systems accurately measure axle and total weights, detect weight categories and vehicle speeds in real time, and help assess infrastructure wear and track violations. Kapsch has deployed ten such systems in partnership with ASFINAG on Austria’s highways, with an IT center near Vienna. An upgrade of the first WIM system on the A1 in Lower Austria recently achieved the required accuracy, contributing to improved road safety and infrastructure durability.

(PRESS RELEASE) VIENNA, 2-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Kapsch Group (VIE: KTCG), a leader in innovative transportation solutions, is addressing the challenges posed by overweight and overloaded vehicles on roads. These vehicles not only cause infrastructure wear but also pose significant safety risks to other road users due to extended braking distances. To mitigate these issues, Kapsch has developed cutting-edge Weigh in Motion (WIM) systems that accurately measure axle and total weights, as well as detect maximum permissible weight categories and vehicle speeds in real time. These systems, installed in the road surface, provide valuable data to assess infrastructure wear and track violations.

“We are very pleased that for the first time in Austria we have succeeded in bringing a weight measurement system for normal speeds into a calibratable accuracy class,” says Thomas Reznicek, Sales Manager for Austria & Switzerland at Kapsch TrafficCom. “This now gives the authorities the opportunity to detect any overloads directly in free flow traffic without having to divert and stop the vehicles at specially equipped traffic control stations.”

For the past several years, Kapsch has partnered with ASFINAG to deploy ten WIM systems across Austria’s highway and motorway network, complemented by an IT center in Inzersdorf near Vienna. In a recent milestone, Kapsch upgraded the first WIM system on the A1 in Lower Austria to achieve the required accuracy class. Following rigorous testing, calibration, and acceptance procedures, this achievement marks a significant advancement in Austria’s road safety and infrastructure durability efforts.
