Engineering Firm Wood to Play Key Role in Expanding Germany’s Renewable Energy Grid

(IN BRIEF) Wood, a global consulting and engineering firm, has been awarded a contract by Dragados Offshore to design and support the development of three massive 2GW convertor stations in the German North Sea. These stations will transfer offshore wind power to Germany’s grid, providing electricity for around four million people. The project, a collaboration between Dragados Offshore and Siemens Energy, aims to contribute to Europe’s energy transition and net-zero goals. Wood’s expertise in offshore energy will be leveraged from the UK, India, and Spain to make this project a reality.

(PRESS RELEASE) ABERDEEN, 19-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Wood PLC, one of the world’s leading consulting and engineering companies operating across Energy and the Built Environment, announces that it has won a contract from Dragados Offshore to provide engineering design and regulatory support for the development of three massive 2GW convertor stations. These convertor stations will play a crucial role in transferring offshore wind power to Germany’s power grid. The projects are a collaboration between Dragados Offshore in Spain and Siemens Energy.

Each of the three offshore high voltage direct current (HVDC) platforms is the size of a European football pitch and located 65 meters above sea level in the German North Sea. They will collect and convert 2GW of power generated by offshore wind farms, providing renewable energy for approximately four million people in Germany.

John Day | President of Oil, Gas & Power Projects at Wood, said:

“Building on our strong engineering heritage and long-standing relationship with Dragados Offshore, we are delighted to be partnering with them on this world-leading project, helping to deliver one of the largest offshore wind to grid connections.

“An integrated energy system is critical to maintaining energy security while achieving the world’s net zero ambitions. This project is a significant step in creating the scale and infrastructure required to secure both. Our technical expertise will ensure successful project delivery as we design and deliver future renewable energy systems.”

Jeroen Poppe | VP Global Business Development of Dragados Offshore, said:

“We are glad to welcome Wood as our engineering partner on these hallmark projects that will shape Europe’s energy transition”
