This order represents Siemens Mobility’s largest Mireo order to date and is a significant step toward achieving more sustainable and efficient rail transport in the region.

(PRESS RELEASE) BERLIN, 14-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Siemens AG (ETR: SIE), a German multinational conglomerate and Europe’s largest industrial manufacturing company, announces that Siemens Mobility has unveiled a landmark order for the delivery of 75 Mireo trains, valued at approximately €500 million, destined to transform the “Central German S-Bahn Network 2025+” (MDSB 2025+). This ambitious project encompasses 41 three-car Mireo trains for Die Länderbahn DLB, 18 four-car Mireo trains, and 16 battery-powered Mireo Plus B trains for DB Regio AG.

Empowering the Future of Central German Transportation

The overarching commissioning bodies for the MDSB 2025+ network include the Zweckverband für den Nahverkehrsraum Leipzig (ZVNL), collaborating with the specialized Saxon transportation associations Verkehrsverbund Mittelsachsen (ZVMS) and Verkehrsverbund Vogtland (ZVV). The Thuringian Ministry of Infrastructure and Agriculture (TMIL) and the Ministry of Infrastructure and Digital Affairs (MID) of Saxony-Anhalt also contribute to this transformative initiative.

Kai Emanuel, Chairman of the ZVNL association, emphasizes the high expectations for these modern, environmentally friendly vehicles, which are anticipated to result in increased passenger numbers and satisfaction. “The ZVNL and its partners in the Central German S-Bahn network have high expectations for the use of these modern, environmentally friendly vehicles. We are hoping for a high level of acceptance, which will be reflected in rising passenger numbers,”

“Our Mireo train is a proven success model that contributes to a high level of passenger comfort and satisfaction. We are delighted to have received the order for 75 Mireo trains for the Central German S-Bahn Network. It is our largest Mireo order to date,” said Gerhard Greiter, CEO North East and Eastern Europe at Siemens Mobility. “The Leipzig transport hub is one of the most important in the Central German metropolitan region. With the delivery of the Mireo trains, we are enabling greater flexibility for public transport in Central Germany, higher capacity per train and more comfort for passengers. This order marks a further step towards achieving a transition in rail transport: By offering more space, better equipment and features, and higher operating frequency, rail transport is becoming more and more attractive.”

The Mireo Train: Pinnacle of Comfort and Sustainability

Siemens Mobility’s Mireo trains are celebrated for their exceptional passenger comfort and satisfaction. The order for 75 Mireo trains represents our largest Mireo order to date and marks a significant milestone in enhancing Central Germany’s public transportation system.

These trains are slated to cover an impressive total of 10.6 million train kilometers each year within the MDSB network. When operations commence as scheduled in December 2026, the Mireo trains will serve the following lines:

  • 4-car Mireo trains: S 4, S 6, and S 10 routes
  • 3-car Mireo trains: S 3, S 5, and S 5x routes
  • 2-car Mireo Plus B battery-powered trains: S1 route

These trains offer spacious seating configurations, free WiFi, family areas, barrier-free access, and a quiet ride. Multiple power sockets and USB ports ensure passenger devices remain charged during journeys. Real-time passenger information systems keep travelers informed, and high-frequency window panes significantly enhance mobile phone reception.

The Mireos boast increased door availability, facilitating smoother boarding, shorter passenger changeovers, and adherence to schedules. Their energy efficiency, up to 25 percent higher than similar-capacity trains, aligns with climate-friendly mobility objectives.

By selecting the Mireo platform for electric and battery-powered trains, the ZVLN leverages the experience, efficiency, and synergy effects gained from this standardized train platform.

To date, Siemens Mobility has sold 22 Mireo fleets, totaling over 400 trains, renowned for their reliability, energy efficiency, and recyclability. The Mireo Smart, available with a short 18-month delivery time and alternative drive options, is the latest addition to this platform.

Siemens Mobility’s commitment to manufacturing excellence ensures that these transformative Mireo trains will contribute to a sustainable and efficient transportation future for Central Germany.
