ABB Expands Partnership with Volvo Cars to Supply Over 1,300 Robots for EV Production

(IN BRIEF) ABB is expanding its partnership with Volvo Cars to supply more than 1,300 robots and functional packages for the production of electric vehicles (EVs). The collaboration aims to support Volvo Cars in achieving sustainability goals as the automotive industry shifts toward electric mobility. ABB’s robots and controllers are expected to deliver up to 20% energy savings at Volvo Cars’ production sites. The partnership builds on their history of joint developments to enhance automotive production efficiency. Initial robot deployments are expected in early 2024.

(PRESS RELEASE) ZURICH, 19-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — ABB (SWX: ABBN), a Swedish–Swiss multinational company leader in robotics, power, heavy electrical equipment, and automation, has announced an expansion of its partnership with Volvo Cars to provide over 1,300 robots and functional packages for the production of the next generation of electric vehicles (EVs). This collaboration aims to support Volvo Cars in achieving its sustainability goals as the automotive industry undergoes a significant shift toward electric mobility.

Marc Segura, President of ABB Robotics, highlighted the automotive industry’s transformation driven by consumer demand for EVs and sustainability, stated “The automotive industry’s historic transformation, driven by increasing consumer demand for electric vehicles and a desire to operate more sustainably, is creating new opportunities as well as challenges for global manufacturers. This latest commitment from our partner Volvo Cars demonstrates our shared focus of delivering more sustainable manufacturing. Through our new, energy efficient large robot family and OmniCoreTM controllers we will help to deliver energy savings of up to 20 percent at sites around the world.”

The agreement includes functional packages encompassing various production tasks, including spot-welding, riveting, dispensing, flow drilling, and ultrasonic weld inspection. These packages are ready-to-use solutions comprising hardware, software, and services. They will be implemented at Volvo Cars’ facilities in Torslanda, Sweden, and Daqing, China. ABB’s OmniCore robot controllers will contribute to energy savings thanks to their highly efficient power electronics and regenerative braking.

ABB will ensure a seamless deployment process, utilizing its RobotStudio® planning and programming software platform to visualize and optimize robot deployment before installation. This virtual planning approach minimizes production interruptions and enables efficient automation system development and validation.

Volvo Cars and ABB have a history of collaborating to enhance automotive production efficiency and robot capabilities. The partnership will continue over the next few years, with initial robot deployments expected in early 2024. This collaboration aligns with ABB’s commitment to supporting the automotive industry in achieving sustainability targets and transitioning to electric vehicle production.
