Terna to Share Public Consultation Results on SE Montecorvino-SE Benevento III Connection

(IN BRIEF) Terna, the company responsible for Italy’s national grid, is set to hold an online meeting on December 19th to unveil the outcomes of a public consultation regarding the “SE Montecorvino-SE Benevento III” 380 kV connection project. The meeting will provide analyses and surveys based on feedback from the consultation, and Terna will proceed with detailed planning and authorization phases afterward. The project, spanning approximately 90 km and involving new power lines, aims to enhance the integration of renewable energy sources, improve grid security, and contribute to Italy’s energy and climate goals. The initiative emphasizes community engagement and environmental considerations in its planning process.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 12-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Terna, the company led by Giuseppina Di Foggia that manages the Italian national grid, will hold an online meeting on 19 December to present the results of public consultation on the future “SE Montecorvino-SE Benevento III” 380 kV connection to citizens in the 29 municipalities affected.

The online session (accessible only via the Teams platform, from 5.00 p.m.) will present analyses and surveys performed on the basis of comments and requests received through public consultation on the new infrastructure in the Southern provinces of Avellino, Benevento and Salerno. Following the meeting, Terna will launch the detailed planning phase to proceed with authorisation.

This meeting is part of the participatory planning procedure initiated in 2021 with the Campania regional authority, local municipalities, environmentalist and trade associations and the superintendencies involved in planning of the power line. Specifically, the public consultation phase, which began on 13 September 2023 and lasts for 60 days, prior to submission of plans for authorisation, involved four meetings in September to illustrate the details of the proposed design, exploring alternatives defined on the basis of indications arising during voluntary consultation and giving citizens the opportunity to make comments and requests and raise issues regarding the project.

The new power line will involve a connection running approximately 90 km between the existing substations of Montecorvino (SA), Avellino Nord and Benevento III. The route will avoid urban areas and, where possible, follow existing lines which will then be removed. In fact, considerable reorganisation of the existing grid is planned once the new infrastructure goes live, with underground laying of around 60 km of power lines enabling demolition of approximately 90 km of existing overhead lines.

The project will promote integration of renewable energy generated by the many wind and solar-power plants located in the provinces in question, with direct environmental, social and economic benefits for citizens and businesses in the area. Furthermore, the new connection will strengthen the interconnectedness of the regional grid, thereby increasing its security and reliability and helping to achieve the efficiency and productivity targets set out in the Integrated National Energy and Climate Plan.

All the information to participate in web meetings, along with project documentation, is available on Terna’s website: https://www.terna.it/en/projects/-common-interest/italy-tunisia-interconnection.
