Terna to Inform Citizens of Ferrara About Electricity Grid Restructuring Project

(IN BRIEF) On January 24th, Terna will host an information session at the Giorgio Bassani Library in Ferrara to present the upcoming restructuring of the city’s electricity grid. The project involves replacing overhead lines with underground cables, constructing a new underground connection, and expanding the existing power station to enhance the electricity system’s security and resilience. This initiative aims to increase transport capacity, optimize renewable energy utilization, and remove approximately 20 km of overhead power lines and 70 pylons, freeing up about 40 hectares of land. Terna’s engagement with local communities and administrations reflects its commitment to shared planning and consultation before project implementation begins.

(PRESS RELEASE) ROME, 20-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — On 24 January, Terna will hold an information session with the citizens of Ferrara to present the future restructuring of the city’s electricity grid.

The event, which will be held from 5 p.m. to 8 p.m. at the Giorgio Bassani Library, Via Giovanni Grosoli 42, in Ferrara, will be an opportunity to provide citizens with information on the project’s features, reasons, benefits and implementation methods.

As a whole, the restructuring of the city of Ferrara’s electricity grid involves the replacement of two 132 kV overhead lines coming out of the Focomorto power station for a total length of more than 9 km with underground cable, the construction of a new 132 kV underground connection in the area south of the city for a length of 3 km, and the expansion of the existing 380 kV Ferrara Nord power station with the related new overhead connections. The works, which are aimed at increasing the security and resilience of the electricity system, will guarantee greater transport capacity to the urban area and will fully optimise the use of renewable energy produced in the area. In addition, the new infrastructure will enable the removal of approximately 20 km of overhead power lines and 70 pylons, freeing up approximately 40 hectares from the existing electricity infrastructure.

The project complements the works to restructure the electricity grid in the area between Colunga and Ferrara that began in early January. The planned modernisation of the electricity grid in the Po Valley in the Emilia-Romagna region will improve the efficiency and quality of the service, benefiting local businesses and citizens.

The “Terna meets” events are part of the voluntary consultation process that Terna undertakes with all local administrations and local communities involved. By engaging directly with the region, the Company aims to ensure the broadest possible knowledge of the development works planned across Italy and seeks shared planning solutions before the work authorisation process begins.
