Henkel and UPM Specialty Papers Push Boundaries of Paper Packaging with Grease-Resistant Solutions

New levels of grease-resistance: Henkel and UPM Specialty Papers launch jointly developed solution.

(IN BRIEF) Henkel and UPM Specialty Papers have partnered to develop innovative coating technologies for fiber-based packaging. The collaboration aims to enhance the performance and sustainability of paper packaging by creating recyclable solutions with superior grease resistance and heat-sealability, providing alternatives to traditional plastic packaging. The joint development by Henkel and UPM Specialty Papers was showcased at Interpack 2023, where two solutions were presented: one combining Henkel’s coating with UPM AsendoTM paper for heat sealability, and another combining a barrier coating with UPM AsendoTM Pro paper for grease resistance and heat sealability. These advancements offer fully recyclable options for food and non-food packaging applications, contributing to a more circular and eco-friendly packaging industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) DÜSSELDORF, 11-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Henkel (ETR: HEN3), a German chemical and consumer goods company, and UPM Specialty Papers showcased their latest advancements in coating technologies for fiber-based packaging at Interpack 2023. The collaboration has resulted in two recyclable paper solutions that push the boundaries of barrier papers, achieving an unprecedented level of grease resistance and offering a heat-sealable alternative to traditional plastic packaging. These innovative solutions, combining Henkel coatings with UPM packaging papers, present fully recyclable options for both food and non-food packaging applications.

During a dedicated Happy Hour event at UPM Specialty Papers’ stand, experts from Henkel and UPM unveiled two breakthrough solutions. The first solution showcased the heat sealability achieved by combining Henkel’s Loctite Liofol HS 2809-22 RE coating with UPM AsendoTM 90 g/m2 paper. The second solution featured a combination of Henkel’s barrier coating Aquence EPIX BC 6134 and UPM AsendoTM Pro 90 g/m2 paper, delivering excellent grease barrier properties along with heat sealability. These joint innovations demonstrate that crucial packaging characteristics for both food and non-food items can now be achieved using paper. Furthermore, Henkel’s coatings can be applied to various substrates, facilitating easy recycling and fiber recovery to support the principles of a circular economy.

The collaboration between Henkel and UPM Specialty Papers represents a significant step forward in advancing the performance and sustainability of paper packaging. By leveraging their expertise and combined capabilities, these companies are driving the development of environmentally friendly solutions that meet the evolving needs of brands and consumers. The showcased recyclable paper solutions offer a compelling proposition for reducing plastic waste and promoting a more circular and sustainable packaging industry.

“At UPM Specialty Papers, we are working closely with innovative partners to create transformative solutions that reimagine the future of sustainable packaging,” commented Mika Uusikartano, Senior Manager, Product Portfolio Management at UPM Specialty Papers. “Working alongside Henkel with a shared focus on creating sustainable alternatives, we have co-created a recyclable, heat-sealable packaging material that is compatible with existing packaging lines. By combining our respective expertise, we are jointly creating barrier paper structures and pushing their performance to an unsurpassed level of grease resistance, while providing converters with a tried and tested concept.”

“As the packaging industry and wider society work to take on urgent environmental challenges, it is essential that we collaborate across the value chain to rapidly deliver solutions. The solutions created with UPM – and successfully presented together at Interpack – embody this spirit of collaboration,” explains Christin Noack, Market Strategy Manager Europe at Henkel. “The creation of packaging and processes to effectively combine paper with barrier and heat seal coatings, required close collaboration with our partners at UPM over a lengthy joint development process to identify and optimize the right fibre-based substrate and coatings combination. Together, we are enabling paper to achieve unmatched barrier performance while meeting the demand for more sustainable packaging. These paper innovations provide packaging manufacturers with turn-key solutions to significantly reduce their own development time when bringing new products to market and we were delighted to see this solution so well received by visitors to Interpack.”
