Eurojust Welcomes Iceland’s Inaugural Liaison Prosecutor, Strengthening Transnational Legal Partnerships

With her appointment, Iceland joins eleven other countries with Liaison Prosecutors at Eurojust, facilitating cross-border judicial collaboration. Ms Benediktsdóttir brings extensive legal experience, having served as Deputy District Prosecutor and taught law at the University of Iceland. She expressed her commitment to prosecuting cross-border and organized crimes during her three and a half-year mandate at Eurojust.

(PRESS RELEASE) THE HAGUE, 12-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Eurojust, an agency of the European Union dealing with judicial co-operation in criminal matters among agencies of the member states, marks a significant milestone as Ms Kolbrún Benediktsdóttir assumes her role as the first Liaison Prosecutor for Iceland at Eurojust. Her appointment follows the Cooperation Agreement signed between Icelandic authorities and Eurojust in 2005. With Ms Benediktsdóttir’s arrival, Eurojust now boasts Liaison Prosecutors from twelve countries, facilitating cross-border judicial cooperation between third countries and EU Member States.

Ms Benediktsdóttir expressed her honor and enthusiasm at joining Eurojust, emphasizing the importance of her role in prosecuting cross-border and organized crimes. Her tenure spans three and a half years, during which she aims to leverage her extensive legal experience to strengthen Iceland’s collaboration with Eurojust. ‘I´m honoured and excited to join Eurojust as the first Liaison Prosecutor from Iceland. It is a very important step for Iceland and I´m sure that it will prove to be essential when it comes to prosecuting cross-border and organised crimes.

Prior to her appointment, Ms Benediktsdóttir served as Deputy District Prosecutor, overseeing cases related to police corruption, and contributing to Nordic and European cooperation efforts in this domain. She also handled matters concerning violent crimes, sexual offenses, drug, and human trafficking. Ms Benediktsdóttir brings a wealth of academic experience, having taught law at the University of Iceland since 2006. Additionally, she served as a substitute judge in the Labour Court of Iceland and was appointed to the Minister of Justice’s Permanent Committee on Procedural Law in 2022. A graduate of the University of Law, Ms Benediktsdóttir earned her bar exam qualifications for the Iceland District Courts in 2008. Her multifaceted background equips her well for her role at Eurojust, where she will play a pivotal part in advancing legal cooperation between Iceland and the EU.
