Amelia Airlines Elevates Sustainability with Neste’s Sustainable Aviation Fuel

(IN BRIEF) Neste and French regional airline Amelia have entered into a partnership to use blended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF). Starting from January 1, 2024, Amelia has been using this sustainable aviation fuel for all flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol. The collaboration supports Amelia’s goal to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by incorporating nearly 5% SAF into its annual fuel consumption, surpassing the European Union’s 2% SAF mandate for 2025. The regular Amsterdam to Strasbourg route will be the first to exclusively benefit from SAF use. Neste’s SAF reduces emissions by up to 80% compared to conventional jet fuel and is made from renewable waste and residue raw materials.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESPOO, 6-Feb-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Neste (HEL: NESTE), the world’s leading producer of sustainable aviation fuel and renewable diesel, and renewable feedstock solutions for various polymers and chemicals industry uses, and Amelia, a prominent French regional airline, have solidified their collaboration by signing an agreement for the supply of blended Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel™ (SAF). Amelia has been actively utilizing this sustainable aviation fuel for all its flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol since January 1, 2024.

This strategic partnership aligns with Amelia’s mission to reduce greenhouse gas emissions across its operations, enabling the airline to incorporate nearly 5% SAF into its total annual fuel consumption. This commitment exceeds the 2% SAF usage mandated by the European Union’s ReFuelEU Aviation regulation, set to take effect from 2025 onwards.

The regular Amsterdam to Strasbourg route, a service that Amelia has been operating since 2022, will become the first route exclusively benefiting from the use of SAF.

Alain Regourd, President of Amelia by Regourd Aviation, expressed enthusiasm for the collaboration, stating, “We are delighted about this new partnership with Neste. Their solution is a perfect fit with our Embraer and Airbus fleet, which can already fly on up to 50% sustainable aviation fuel. We are looking forward to further expanding our use of sustainable fuels and carrying on our path to lower carbon emissions.”

Alexander Kueper, leading Renewable Aviation Business at Neste, emphasized the significance of decarbonizing aviation, saying, “Decarbonizing aviation is more important than ever, and we are proud to support Amelia in reducing its environmental footprint. Using Neste My Sustainable Aviation Fuel for all flights departing from Amsterdam Airport Schiphol enables Amelia to substantially reduce greenhouse gas emissions of its aircraft operations. We look forward to continuing to work together.”

Adrien Chabot, Head of Innovation & Sustainability at Amelia, highlighted the role of sustainable aviation fuel in the airline’s decarbonization strategy, stating “The use of sustainable aviation fuel is a major pillar of Amelia’s decarbonization strategy, complementing the company’s other development axes. Its use before the upcoming regulation embodies Amelia’s willingness and commitment to accelerate towards a more sustainable regional aviation.”

Sustainable Aviation Fuel (SAF) is a renewable aviation fuel that provides a greener alternative to traditional fossil-based jet fuel. Neste MY Sustainable Aviation Fuel, in particular, reduces greenhouse gas emissions by up to 80%* over the fuel’s life cycle when compared to conventional jet fuel. Neste SAF is produced from sustainably sourced, 100% renewable waste and residue raw materials, such as used cooking oil and animal fat waste. It can be blended with conventional jet fuel and seamlessly used with existing aircraft engines and fueling infrastructure.

*) When used in neat form (i.e. unblended) and calculated with established life cycle assessment (LCA) methodologies, such as CORSIA methodology
