Zoox Collaborates with AFRY to Advance Autonomous Vehicle Development

(IN BRIEF) Zoox, an American subsidiary of Amazon specializing in autonomous ride-hailing vehicles, partners with AFRY, leveraging their vehicle engineering expertise from Sweden to enhance the development of Zoox’s purpose-built robotaxi. This innovative vehicle, designed for fully autonomous operation, marks a significant step towards the future of transportation. AFRY’s contributions span various technical domains, aiding in vehicle development and deployment on public roads in Foster City, California, and Las Vegas, Nevada. The collaboration underscores the importance of global cooperation in advancing autonomous mobility solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 11-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Zoox is bringing vehicle engineering expertise from Sweden to support the development of its purpose-built robotaxi in the US.

The American company Zoox, an independent subsidiary of Amazon based in California, has developed fully autonomous, electric vehicles designed for ride-hailing. The Zoox purpose-built vehicle does not look like a classic car; it is completely autonomous and does not have traditional driving controls like a steering wheel or a dashboard.

First of its kind on public roads

The purpose-built vehicle is the first of its kind and has started to operate on public roads in Foster City, California and Las Vegas, Nevada. AFRY has worked with Zoox since 2018 within body engineering, simulations (CAE), propulsion validation, and the development of new attribute requirements and validation methods related to this new type of vehicle.

“AFRY has been a valuable partner to Zoox, providing a range of expertise across several technical domains and contributing to the progress we have made towards our vehicle development and deployment on public roads,” says Andy Piper, Vice President of Vehicle Development at Zoox.

“This project truly frames our vision – Making Future. This vehicle is a part of the future of transportation. And the electric drive technology also contributes to the sustainable transition“, says Martin Öman, Head of Division Industrial and Digital Solutions at AFRY.

Global collaboration for innovation

The AFRY engineers that collaborate around this project are in the US, UK, Trollhättan, Gothenburg, and Borlänge.

“We are supporting the client with our great engineering expertise within the automotive industry, which is needed when you are developing such an innovative product”, says Martin Öman.
