ZF Aftermarket Introduces Repair Kits for Electric Axle Drives, Expanding Support for Independent Workshops

(IN BRIEF) ZF Aftermarket is bolstering its electric drivetrain offerings by introducing repair kits for electric axle drives. While electric motors are known for their durability and limited moving parts, they can still require repairs due to factors like dirt, corrosion, sealing issues, animal damage, or accidents. In the past, such spare parts were typically only available from the car manufacturer during the warranty period. However, as electric vehicles age, independent workshops are increasingly handling electric car repairs, necessitating access to specific spare parts. ZF, a global leader in electric drives, is now providing specially curated repair kits for 43 distinct repair scenarios related to electric axle drives, including tasks like coolant connection replacements, parking lock repairs, engine mount replacements, sensor changes, and drive shaft replacements. These kits include all necessary components and tools for each repair, without requiring the removal of the electric motor or axle drive. However, the workshops must ensure that only individuals with high-voltage training perform the work. The 43 Electric Axle Drive Repair Kits from ZF Aftermarket are now available for order, with plans for further kits targeting various vehicle manufacturers in the future. They will be showcased at Automechanika Shanghai from November 29 to December 2, 2023.

(PRESS RELEASE) FRIEDRICHSHAFEN, 30-Nov-2023— /EuropaWire/ — ZF Aftermarket is taking its range for the electric drivetrain to the next level: Following products from the maintenance area, such as the ZF Lifeguard e-Fluids developed especially for electric and hybrid vehicles, the first products from the repair area are now available. With the new repair kits, independent workshops now have access to specific spare parts for electric axle drives.

Electric motors are considered to be particularly low-wear and have only a few moving parts compared to combustion engines. However, it would be wrong to deduce from this that electric cars will not require any repairs to their drive systems. After years of use, damage to components can also occur here – whether due to dirt or corrosion of contact points, loss of sealing, animal bites or accidents.

Often, it is not the central components like the electric motor or power electronics that are affected, but only peripheral parts such as sensors, plugs, housings or cables. Until now, spare parts were only available from the car manufacturer because most electric cars were still covered by the manufacturer’s warranty. However, this is changing as vehicles get older.

Independent workshops are now increasingly dealing with repairs of electric cars and need the appropriate spare parts to do so. As one of the leading producers of electric drives worldwide, ZF is now making its products available to the independent aftermarket for the first time via its aftermarket division. These are initially specially compiled kits for a total of 43 repair scenarios on electric axle drives.

With the new kits, workshops can carry out the following repairs, for example:

  • Replace leaking coolant connections
  • Repair defective parking locks
  • Replace engine mounts (e.g. after an accident)
  • Change speed or temperature sensors
  • Replace drive shafts

The kits contain all the spare parts, fastening elements and tools required for the respective repair. Important note: None of this work requires the electric motor or the electric axle drive to be removed. However, workshops must ensure that only people with high-voltage training carry out the relevant work. In order to de-energise the vehicles for repair, training level 2S in accordance with DGUV 209-093 is required. The necessary training course is available from ZF Aftermarket besides many others for various target groups.

The 43 Electric Axle Drive Repair Kits from ZF Aftermarket are already available to order and will be presented to the public for the first time at Automechanika Shanghai, which takes place from 29 November to 2 December 2023. The exact contents of the individual repair kits and all vehicle models for which they are available can be viewed in the ZF Aftermarket Online Product Catalog or in this brochure. ZF Aftermarket has planned further repair kits for various vehicle manufacturers in the future.
