(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 18-Jul-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE Renewables Europe & Australia GmbH has been awarded a tender to develop a wind farm in the state of Hesse. The planned wind farm, located in the municipality of Staufenberg, will have an installed capacity of over 30 megawatts (MW) and is expected to generate green electricity for approximately 22,000 households in the region.

Katja Wünschel, CEO of RWE Renewables Europe & Australia, expressed satisfaction with winning the tender and emphasized the importance of considering suitable forest areas for the energy transition, while prioritizing nature conservation and species protection. The Staufenberg site, which already hosts several wind turbines nearby, was chosen due to its suitability and existing infrastructure.

Hesse, known for its significant forest coverage of over 42%, offers potential sites for wind turbines in areas that have undergone clear-cutting or are well-developed for forestry purposes. RWE is engaging in dialogue with local stakeholders to ensure the project aligns with local interests. Discussions are underway with EAM Natur Energie GmbH, an energy supplier and project developer based in Kassel, regarding cooperation opportunities for wind turbine projects in the adjacent municipal land of Allendorf (Lumda). RWE has also initiated consultations with Sonnenland eG, a local citizens’ energy cooperative, to explore citizen participation and community involvement options. Information events will be held for residents as the planning process progresses.

RWE is a global leader in renewable energy and is committed to expanding its green portfolio. In Germany, the company plans to invest €15 billion in its renewable projects by the end of the decade. With approximately 90 onshore wind farms already in operation in the country, RWE is actively seeking additional sites for wind and solar projects and is bolstering its team to accelerate expansion.
