RWE Takes Solar Business to New Heights in Spain, Launches Puerta del Sol Farm

(IN BRIEF) RWE is expanding its solar business in Spain with the commissioning of the Puerta del Sol solar farm, following the earlier launch of Casa Valdes. Puerta del Sol, located near Madrid, has a capacity of 44 MWac and utilizes bifacial solar modules. RWE Renewables Iberia is also in the commissioning phase of Las Vaguadas and constructing the Gazules project, both solar ventures in Spain. RWE aims to enter the Spanish offshore market alongside Ferrovial. RWE’s solar capacity in Spain will reach around 250 MWac, complementing its existing onshore wind projects. The company remains committed to advancing clean energy initiatives in Spain.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 26-Jun-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — RWE AG (ETR: RWE), a German multinational energy company, continues to make significant strides in expanding its solar business in Spain. Following the successful launch of the Casa Valdes solar farm earlier this year, RWE has now commissioned its sister project, Puerta del Sol. Located near Madrid in the Guadalajara province, Puerta del Sol boasts a capacity of 44 MWac and has been equipped with approximately 100,000 bifacial solar modules.

Bifacial solar cells are designed with a double-sided module, allowing them to absorb solar irradiance from both the front and rear sides. The inclusion of a second glass pane on the rear side captures refracted light, enhancing production and overall module efficiency at the solar plant.

Katja Wünschel, CEO RWE Renewables Europe & Australia: “The commissioning of Puerta del Sol makes me very proud. RWE is now operating solar capacity of more than 140 megawatts in Spain. Innovative technologies like the bifacial modules enable RWE to make the best use of the Spanish sun and to drive forward the energy transition in Spain. We are happy that the expansion of our business is progressing well in Spain, which is one of our most promising growth markets.”

RWE Renewables Iberia, a key driver of green energy in Spain, has not only commissioned two solar farms in 2023 but is also in the final stages of the Las Vaguadas project (10 MW) in the province of Badajoz. Additionally, RWE is actively constructing a large-scale solar project in Andalusia known as the Gazules project. Consisting of two solar farms, Gazules 1 and Gazules 2, this venture will deliver a combined rated capacity of 46 MWac each. Upon completion at the end of 2023, RWE’s solar capacity in Spain will reach approximately 250 MWac.

In addition to its solar endeavors, RWE Renewables Iberia already operates an onshore wind capacity of around 490 MW in Spain. The company is also constructing the Orkoien onshore wind project near Pamplona to test innovative sustainable technologies.

With a strong foundation in onshore and solar business in Spain, RWE is now actively exploring opportunities in the Spanish offshore market in collaboration with its partner, Ferrovial. The companies aim to jointly develop, construct, and operate floating offshore wind farms off the Spanish coast.

RWE remains committed to driving the transition to clean energy in Spain, contributing to the country’s sustainable future.
