Pike Solar Project by JUWI Marks Major Leap in Colorado’s Renewable Energy Landscape

MVV’s subsidiary JUWI was building the “Pike Solar” project with over 220 megawatts in Colorado (USA).

(IN BRIEF) JUWI, a subsidiary of MVV, has completed the construction of the Pike Solar project in Colorado, the largest PV project in its history, generating 223.6 megawatts. The solar park will supply energy to Colorado Springs Utilities under a 17-year power purchase agreement, meeting the electricity needs of over 46,000 US households annually. JUWI handled development, engineering, and construction and will provide ongoing operations and maintenance services. The project underscores JUWI’s expertise in renewable energy development and its commitment to advancing sustainable energy solutions.

(PRESS RELEASE)  WÖRRSTADT, Germany, 13-Feb-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — JUWI GmbH, a Germany based project development and management subsidiary of MVV, with focus on renewable energies, has achieved a significant milestone with the completion of the Pike Solar project, the largest photovoltaic (PV) endeavor in the company’s history. With an impressive output of 223.6 megawatts, this solar park, constructed for energy company Deriva (formerly Duke Energy), is now operational, providing sustainable energy equivalent to the annual electricity needs of over 46,000 US households.

The Pike Solar project, located in Colorado, marks a significant contribution to regional renewable energy goals. Under a 17-year power purchase agreement, the solar farm will supply energy to Colorado Springs Utilities (CSU), the regional American energy supplier. Travas Deal, CEO of CSU, expressed enthusiasm, stating, “Now the largest solar array on our system, Pike Solar represents a significant step toward our goal of an 80% reduction in carbon emissions by 2030.” Chris Fallon, President of Deriva Energy, echoed this sentiment, highlighting the project’s importance in advancing sustainable energy objectives, “This is a critical step closer to achieving Colorado Springs Utilities’ sustainable energy goals and look forward to powering homes and businesses with new, clean electricity.”

JUWI spearheaded the development, engineering, and construction of the Pike Solar project and will continue to provide operations and maintenance services. Situated on over 530 hectares south of Colorado Springs, the solar park employed around 350 people during peak construction. Ownership of the plant will be assumed by Deriva Energy, with Deriva and JUWI jointly managing operational and maintenance responsibilities.

Michael Martin, CEO of JUWI Inc., commended the collaborative effort that ensured the timely and safe completion of the Pike Solar project. He stated, “The safe and on-time completion of Pike Solar results from strong collaboration among project participants, including the teams from Deriva Energy, Colorado Springs Utilities, El Paso County, City of Fountain, and all our reliable and hardworking subcontractors.” Construction commenced in late autumn 2022, with over 400,000 solar modules installed on a single-axis tracking substructure system.

Stephan Hansen, COO of JUWI, emphasized the significance of this achievement, stating, “The successful completion of the largest solar park in JUWI history with 223 megawatts once again proves our leading expertise as a project developer, EPC service provider and operations manager. In the USA we have now implemented 25 projects with a total output of around 730 megawatts and have an attractive pipeline.” Carsten Bovenschen, CEO of the JUWI Group, underscored the company’s position as a key player in renewable energy markets, expressing satisfaction with the record-breaking project, “This underlines our role as one of the leading renewable energy companies in selected foreign markets.”
