TU Delft: Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Rebrands to Reflect Evolving Research Landscape

Faculty of Mechanical Engineering Rebrands to Reflect Evolving Research Landscape

(IN BRIEF) Effective January 1, the Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Science (3mE) has adopted a new name, Mechanical Engineering (ME), in response to the evolving nature of its research programs and to strengthen its external identity. The decision for the name change was made after consultations with stakeholders, including employees from education and research, study associations, the professional field, and the employee participation body. The new name, ME, is future-proof and accommodates emerging disciplines such as biomedical technology, robotics, and energy transition. This rebranding aligns with the faculty’s mission to develop tools that enhance people’s lives and address societal challenges in the fields of Health, Transport & Mobility, Energy, and High Tech Systems & Materials. While the transition involves updating various aspects, such as IT systems and signage, some changes will be phased in throughout 2024.

(PRESS RELEASE) DELFT, 8-Jan-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — The Faculty of Mechanical, Maritime and Materials Science (3mE) is starting the new year with a new name: Mechanical Engineering (ME). The name change took effect from 1 January. With this name, the faculty returns to the basis that connects all disciplines and strengthens their external profile.

The faculty has been discussing a name change for some time because its current name no longer reflects the faculty’s research programmes. After consultations with employees from education and research, study associations, professional field and the employee participation body, the Executive Board decided positively on the proposal for this name change in February 2023.

The new name is future-proof and offers room for new, fast-growing disciplines and research areas such as biomedical technology, robotics and energy transition. The new name has a connective character, suiting the profile of a versatile faculty that encourages collaboration with an open attitude.

Phased introduction

In the past few months, a lot of hard work has been done behind the scenes to implement the new name. From IT systems and wayfinding, to Email addresses and diplomas, everything has to be changed. We have come a long way, but some of these changes will be made later in 2024. For instance, the big yellow letters on the front facades of the faculty building are expected to be replaced in February.

Tools to improve life

The Faculty of Mechanical Engineering develops and uses fundamental knowledge to design tools that give people new possibilities. To make life better, healthier and more sustainable. The faculty works from a deep-rooted desire to understand our environment, determined to find out the underlying mechanisms. They translate the gained knowledge and insights from this into solutions for large and small social issues, in the fields of Health, Transport & Mobility, Energy and High Tech Systems & Materials.
