Switzerland saw another drop in electricity consumption in 2012

6-2-2013 — /europawire.eu/ — Electricity consumption in the Swiss control area has fallen for the second year in a row. Reported consumption in the area for 2012 was 63,242 GWh. This figure is provisional and may change. It refers to all electrical energy drawn from the Swiss transmission and distribution grids, and includes transmission and distribution losses as well as demand from power plants.

The drop in power consumption compared to last year is remarkable, especially given that February 2012 saw Switzerland in the grips of some extremely cold weather. With a national average temperature difference of -4.1 degrees, it was one of the ten coldest Februaries since records began. The energy statistics for that month reveal a swing, with around 10% higher electricity consumption than in the previous year.

Our energy overview for Switzerland is updated every month and is available on the Swissgrid website.
