GKN Aerospace’s Malaysia Facility Earns Key Certifications for Engine Parts Repair and Manufacturing

Additionally, the facility has obtained Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) qualification for fan blades, highlighting its leadership in the aerospace industry. The site will focus on low-pressure compressor component repair for various engines and plans to explore additive manufacturing technology for engine parts repair in collaboration with local universities. GKN Aerospace has invested $30 million in this facility, expecting further growth in capabilities and staff to better serve the Asia-Pacific region.

(PRESS RELEASE) REDDITCH, 27-Sep-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — GKN Aerospace’s engines parts repair facility in Johor, Malaysia, has achieved a series of landmark certifications. The Malaysian facility has recently received official approvals from international airworthiness authorities including the Civil Aviation Administration of China (CAAC), the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS), and the Civil Aviation Authority in the UK (CAA). In addition, achieving Original Equipment Manufacturer (OEM) qualification for the PWAEI V2500 fan blades and for CFM56-5B and CFM56-7 fan blades is another important milestone that underscores GKN Aerospace’s leadership position in the aerospace industry.

The site will act as a centre of excellence for the repair of engine low pressure compressor (LPC) components for CFM56-5B, CFM56-7 and V2500. The facility will complement GKN Aerospace’s existing component repair facility in El Cajon, California. In addition, the Johor site, in collaboration with other GKN Aerospace sites and local universities, will research the application of additive manufacturing technology into engine parts repair.

Around 110 employees currently work at the Malaysia facility, with strong growth in capabilities and people expected over the coming years. GKN Aerospace has invested $30 million in both the facility and its state of the art equipment and technologies in order to support its customers in the Asia-Pacific region.
