EBRD Appoints Fatih Türkmenoğlu as Head of North Macedonia to Drive Investment and Green Transition

(IN BRIEF) The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has appointed Fatih Türkmenoğlu as the new Head of North Macedonia. He will assume his role on November 1 and will lead the EBRD’s Skopje resident office. Türkmenoğlu, a Turkish national, brings extensive experience in infrastructure and commercial banking, having joined the EBRD in 2012. He anticipates that the EBRD will invest over €180 million in North Macedonia in 2023 and is committed to supporting the country’s green transition and sustainability projects.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 1-Nov-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Bank for Reconstruction and Development (EBRD) has appointed Fatih Türkmenoğlu as its new Head of North Macedonia. He will take up his position on 1 November and lead the Bank’s Skopje resident office.

A Turkish national, Mr Türkmenoğlu joined the Bank in 2012 as a Principal Banker in the Municipal and Environmental Infrastructure team in Istanbul, Türkiye. In 2018 he was promoted to the position of Associate Director, Senior Banker. The following year he was appointed Head of the EBRD’s Turkmenistan resident office, where his work predominantly centred on private sector projects.

Mr Türkmenoğlu is a seasoned international banking professional and has a wealth of experience in infrastructure and commercial banking. Throughout his career, he has also specialised in project implementation, cross-border finance, legal frameworks and donor relations. Before joining the EBRD in 2012, he held positions in both, the public sector and commercial banks.

Mr Türkmenoğlu is anticipating the EBRD to invest over €180 million in the country in 2023. He noted: “I am looking forward to engaging with the authorities and the private sector during this exciting period for the EBRD in North Macedonia. We are committed to supporting the country’s green transition through innovative financing products and through some remarkable upcoming sustainability projects.”

Mr Türkmenoğlu holds degrees in economics and finance from universities in Türkiye and the United Kingdom. In taking this new role he succeeds Andi Aranitasi, who is now heading the Bank’s operations in Uzbekistan.

Since North Macedonia joined the EBRD in 1993 the Bank has invested more than €2.6 billion in 180 projects there, nearly half of which were in the private sector. The Bank’s priority for the country is to support competitiveness, green transition, and further integration into regional and global markets.
