ZEISS Elyra 7 with Lattice SIM for superresolution microscopy wins R&D 100 Award in the “Analytical/Test” category

(PRESS RELEASE) JENA, Germany, 22-Nov-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — ZEISS wins a R&D 100 Award for superresolution microscope. ZEISS Elyra 7 with Lattice SIM was selected by judges from R&D Magazine as an award recipient in the “Analytical/Test” category. The Award Ceremony will take place on December 5th in San Mateo, California during the R&D100 conference.

A microscope system, ZEISS Elyra 7 with Lattice SIM is used for superresolution imaging in biomedical research. Researchers profit from its novel Lattice SIM technology that is extremely light-efficient and fast which results to less photodamage and high imaging speed. Lattice SIM illumination now can be used for almost all imaging experiments with live and fixed specimens, pushing the boundaries of fast superresolution. Fast processes in living samples can now be examined gently, with a large field of view, in 3D, over long periods of time and in two colors simultaneously.

Lattice SIM provides optical sectioning and a doubling of diffraction-limited resolution in 3D. Improving the classic principle of superresolution structured illumination microscopy (SR-SIM), the Lattice SIM technology makes it possible to achieve an image acquisition rate of up to 255 frames per second (fps). Also, the high illumination pattern contrast and robust reconstruction allow for imaging in deeper or more scattering tissue.

The requirements of the experiment can be precisely matched to the achievable spatial resolution and frame rate of ZEISS Elyra 7. The unique technology opens the door to new discoveries in many areas of life sciences, allowing to overcome speed-, 3D- and photodamage-limitations of classic SIM systems.

An annual international competition, the R&D 100 Awards recognizes the 100 most exceptional innovations in science and technology. The winners come from industry, academia, private research institutes and laboratories.
