Salini Impregilo lands four contracts worth a combined $490 million in Oman, Abu Dhabi and the United States

MILAN, 12-Dec-2017 — /EuropaWire/ — Salini Impregilo has won four contracts worth a combined $490 million in Oman, Abu Dhabi and the United States, highlighting the infrastructure group’s breadth and scale as well as its leadership in the water and transportation sectors.

In Oman, the Group enters the country with its Fisia Italimpianti unit winning a Letter of Award by a consortium led by Acwa with Veolia and Dhofar International for Investment and Development Co SAOG, with joint-venture partner Abengoa, to design and build a $100-million water desalination plant. The JV will use the most updated reverse osmosis technology, to deliver up to 113,650 cubic metres of potable water a day to the southwest city of Salalah. Fisia Italimpianti has a 51% stake in the JV. The contract, to be completed in 27 months, is the unit’s second this year, following one worth $255-million obtained in April to build a desalination plant in Saudi Arabia. Both projects respond to the growing need for water in the region’s desert climate.

In Abu Dhabi, Salini Impregilo will design and build a $200-million, five-kilometre section of a transit way that will cross two islands to connect the Capital District with the Central Business District, that the capital of the United Arab Emirates is building for its 2030 development plan to foster economic growth. Once completed in 2020, the highway between the islands of Umm Lafina and Al Reem will cross a mangrove reserve, where Salini Impregilo will relocate and plant double the number of mangroves expected to be lost, following the sustainability principles that it applies at all its construction sites.

In the United States, the Group’s Lane Construction unit has won two contracts in Virginia for a combined $190 million, the latest in a series of public works that not only highlights its long presence in the U.S. commonwealth but also its leadership in roadwork across the country. The first at $105 million involves improving an interchange in Virginia Beach as part of the second phase of the I-64/I-264 Interchange Improvements project. Work is to begin by the spring of 2018 and be completed by the fall of 2021. The second worth $85.6 million will add a through-lane along part of eastbound I-66 in the Ballston area. Construction is to begin by mid-2018 and take about 30 months. By working on projects that help reduce congestion and, as a consequence, air pollution, Lane is fulfilling a wider objective of supporting sustainable development.

The two Virginia contracts add to the more than $2 billion worth of new orders won in the United States this year, underlining its importance as the Group’s single biggest market where it continues to expand.

These four contracts belong to segments of the global infrastructure market with strong growth prospects, and Salini Impregilo’s strategy to focus on them has produced a strong order book. This strategy has rewarded the Group with a successful debt refinancing and an upgrade by a ratings agency, as well as led to it being recognized by industry observers as the global leader in water for the fifth year in a row.
