GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA to donate Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to the New England Aquarium

Gift represents 100 percent of Aquarium’s estimated energy use

BOSTON, 06-8-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — For the fifth consecutive year, GDF SUEZ Energy Resources NA, one of the largest retail electricity providers to commercial, industrial, and institutional customers in the country, announced that it will donate Renewable Energy Certificates (RECs) to the New England Aquarium. The gift will match 100 percent of the Aquarium’s estimated annual electricity usage.

Each Green-e© Certified REC represents the environmental attributes or benefits associated with a specific quantity of energy generated from a renewable source, such as solar or wind. The donation will displace the estimated annual greenhouse gas emissions of 1,083 passenger vehicles; 1,924 tons of waste diverted from landfills; or the carbon dioxide emissions from the total energy usage of 469 households.

“We’re proud of our ongoing relationship with the New England Aquarium,” said J.D. Burrows, Vice President of Marketing for GDF SUEZ Energy Resources. “We share in its commitment to promote eco-friendly practices and protect Earth’s natural resources, and are pleased to be a part of its environmental conservation efforts.”

Bud Ris, President and CEO of the New England Aquarium, said, “GDF SUEZ Energy Resources has played an integral role in our efforts to reduce our carbon footprint. Thanks to their continued generosity, we’re moving closer to making our vision a reality and having a lasting global impact on the environment through our educational programs and conservation initiatives.”

In addition to helping reduce greenhouse gas emissions, RECs help to encourage the development of domestic sources of cleaner, renewable energy. Green-e© is the nation’s leading independent certification and verification program for renewable energy and greenhouse gas emission reductions in the retail market.
