(PRESS RELEASE) BRUSSELS, 13-May-2019 — /EuropaWire/ — The new RD&I Monitoring Report 2018 by ENTSO-E has just been made publicly available. The paper looks into the progress of European TSO-related research development and innovation (RD&I) activities.
Improving electricity network management, reducing carbon emissions and developing more efficient business models & market concepts and designs are among the benefits the society will receive from the European TSO-related projects. According to ENTSO-E, while for most projects, exploitation of results is expected to begin in less than 5 years, most results need significant investment before they can be exploited.
The European TSO-related research and development (RD&I) activities as defined in ENTSO-Es RD&I Roadmap 2017–2026 are assessed for their progress in the ENTSO-E’s RD&I Monitoring Report 2018. A survey of 57 R&D projects is conducted and included in the report. Furthermore, 131 additional projects in the field of digitalisation, as well as 18 projects related to flexibility services (149 in total) have also been considered, but in less details.
The new RD&I Roadmap, which will use and rely on the results of the current R&D Monitoring Report, will be released later in 2019. Based on the results from the R&D Monitoring Report action priorities will be assigned to update the ENTSO-E RD&I Roadmap. Particular attention will be paid to improving the capturing of macro-trends such as the digitalisation of power systems, decentralisation of operations, and sector coupling.
