Dr Richard Burnley to succeed Jane Vizard EBU’s new Legal Director

Dr Richard Burnley has been appointed as the EBU’s new Legal Director to replace the current Director Jane Vizard who is retiring.

GENEVA, 20-Apr-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Burnley has worked at the EBU for over five years, first as Legal Adviser in media and competition law, and latterly as Head of Regulatory Legal Services.

Prior to joining the EBU, Burnley worked on major EU law cases for a leading law firm in both London and Brussels and was a Senior Associate at the Office of Communications (OFCOM) in London. He has extensive experience in the media sector, both in regulatory law and policy, and corporate and commercial law.

At the EBU, he currently advises Members and national institutions on all aspects of media and telecommunications law. He offers guidance on competition law such as state aid, mergers and antitrust; and provides advice on corporate governance and sports rights issues.

EBU Director General Ingrid Deltenre said: “Having worked alongside Richard for a number of years, we are confident he has the expertise and experience to continue the outstanding work the team have been doing under Jane’s direction.

“At a time when our Members are facing increasing challenges from both economic and political interests, it is important that we have the right team in place to strengthen the regulatory framework for PSM and provide essential support and advice for Members.”

Burnley says: “I am really looking forward to taking up this new challenge, and continuing to work closely with our Members to make a real difference, particularly at such a pivotal time for European media regulation.”

Burnley takes up his new role on 1 July, with Ms Vizard staying on until the end of the summer to ensure a smooth transition.
