(PRESS RELEASE) MUNICH, 2-Jan-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — The Fraunhofer IPA (Fraunhofer-Institut für Produktionstechnik und Automatisierung IPA) research project, in collaboration with industrial partner Varta, is working to completely digitize the process of lithium-ion battery cell production. By digitizing the entire process chain, the project aims to significantly improve and stabilize the quality of these battery cells.

The initial phase of the project will focus on developing and testing strategies for digitizing the Li-ion CoinPower production facility at the Ellwangen works. The solutions developed will then be evaluated for their potential to be applied to the production of Li-ion 21700 round cells.

A key aspect of the digitization process is the development of a traceability concept, which will allow for the tracking and assignment of process parameters and product features. Traceability technologies are crucial for creating consistent process and quality models in battery cell production, and provide the data needed to improve and stabilize the quality of the final products.

In order to fully trace components and process steps back to the finished product and eliminate any information gaps, a holistic approach is necessary. This is why the Fraunhofer IPA team has developed a solution morphology for the technological integration of traceability concepts in battery production.
