Professor Daniel Arribas-Bel Honored with Royal Geographical Society Award

(IN BRIEF) Professor Daniel Arribas-Bel, a member of the University’s School of Environmental Sciences and Department of Geography and Planning, has been awarded the 2024 Taylor & Francis Award by the Royal Geographical Society for his outstanding contribution to teaching in higher education. Celebrated for his work in geographic data science, Arribas-Bel is recognized among 25 other experts and organizations for their significant contributions to geography. On accepting the award, he highlighted the role of the open-source and open science communities in his success and expressed his fulfillment in mentoring the next generation of geographic data scientists. The award ceremony is scheduled to be held in London on June 3, honoring Arribas-Bel’s influence in the field, alongside other notable recipients such as Sir David Attenborough and Dame Fiona Reynolds in past years.

(PRESS RELEASE) LIVERPOOL, 8-May-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Professor Daniel  Arribas-Bel, from the University’s School of Environmental Sciences, has received a prestigious award from the Royal Geographical Society.

Dani has been awarded the 2024 Taylor & Francis Award for excellence in the practice and promotion of teaching in higher education.

He is one of 25 experts and organisations to receive awards and medals from the Society for their notable contributions to geography.

On receiving his award, Dani said: “I am thrilled to receive this award for my work on teaching in higher education. Helping the next generation of geographic data scientists become independent learners and find their own paths is possibly the most rewarding aspect of my career.

“It is also something I would not have been able to do without the contributions of the much wider open-source and open science communities, who are in great deal responsible for the achievement.”

A Professor in Geographic Data Science with the University’s Department of Geography and Planning, Dani is a member of the Geographic Data Science Lab and the Deputy Programme Director for Urban Analytics at The Alan Turing Institute.

The Royal Geographical Society supports and recognises geographers from across the globe.  Its prestigious medals and awards have recognised excellence in geographical research and fieldwork, teaching and public engagement since the 1830s and past recipients include Sir David Attenborough and Dame Fiona Reynolds.

Dani will be presented with his award at a special ceremony at the Society in London on Monday, 3 June.
