EU Finances Major Housing Initiative for IDPs in Western Ukraine with Sweco at the Helm

(IN BRIEF) Sweco has been selected to lead procurement and support construction of housing in six cities in western Ukraine to help meet the needs of internally displaced people. The project, funded by the EU, aims to provide housing, heating, water, and electricity and will comply with European procurement norms. The project will start immediately and continue for two years in collaboration with local Ukrainian consultants. The client is Nefco, the Nordic Green Bank, acting as an implementing agency for the EU’s actions to support Ukraine.

The objective of the project is to quickly address the housing needs of internally displaced persons (IDPs) in the country, by providing them with access to essential amenities such as heating, water, and electricity.

The EU has decided to finance the construction of housing, schools, pre-schools, hospitals, and the repair of infrastructure in liberated cities in Ukraine, in response to the impact of the ongoing war. Sweco’s role in the project involves ensuring that the procurement process for contractors adheres to European norms and standards.

The project will start immediately and is expected to continue for two years. Sweco will collaborate with local Ukrainian consultants throughout the project. Nefco has a proven track record in financing municipal projects in Ukraine and serves as the implementing agency for the EU’s support initiatives in the country.
