Sweco to Lead Preliminary Research on Hydrogen Routes for Fluxys Belgium’s Pipeline Network

(IN BRIEF) Infrastructure company Fluxys Belgium has partnered with Sweco to prepare its pipeline network for the transportation of hydrogen and CO2. Sweco has been assigned to conduct a feasibility study and preliminary research for multiple hydrogen routes in Ghent and Antwerp. The study includes approximately 70 km of pipelines and encompasses design, environmental impact assessment, and safety coordination. The Belgian government is supporting the development of hydrogen and CO2 transportation pipelines and providing financial assistance through various funds. The project is expected to be completed by January 2024, with the first grid connections planned for commissioning in 2026.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 15-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Sweco (STO: SWEC-B), a European engineering consultancy company, announces that infrastructure company Fluxys Belgium is gearing up its pipeline network to facilitate the transportation of hydrogen and CO2. In a significant development, Sweco has been awarded the contract to conduct a comprehensive feasibility study and preliminary research on multiple hydrogen routes in Ghent and Antwerp.

Given the crucial role of large hydrogen volumes in driving climate and energy transition, the ports of Ghent and Antwerp are poised to become prominent European hubs in this domain.

“Transporting hydrogen and green molecules is essential in redesigning Europe’s energy system. As an engineering partner, we are happy to contribute to a sustainable and climate positive society,” says Erwin Malcorps, Business Area President Sweco Belgium.

The study encompasses approximately 70 km of pipelines, and Sweco’s responsibilities extend to design, environmental impact assessment, and safety coordination. The Belgian government has demonstrated its commitment to supporting the development of at least 150 km of hydrogen and CO2 transportation pipelines within the country. Financial assistance for the project is being provided through various funds, including the Energy Transition Fund.

Sweco commenced its assignment in October 2022 and is expected to conclude by January 2024. The first hydrogen and/or CO2 grid connections are scheduled for commissioning in 2026, marking a significant milestone in advancing the transition to cleaner energy sources.
