Palestinian Medical Students Experience Clinical and Surgical Training at University of Dundee’s School of Medicine’s Summer School

(IN BRIEF) Sixteen third-year medical students from the Arab American University in Palestine participated in a two-week Summer School at the University of Dundee’s School of Medicine’s Summer School. Led by Dr. David Russell and organized by Miss Victoria Kirkwood, the program aimed to enhance the students’ clinical, surgical, and communication skills using simulation facilities. During the Summer School, the students engaged in various workshops and tutorials, including sessions at Clinical Skills, Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification, and Surgical Skills. They also visited the University Department of Orthopaedics (UDOTS), where they learned about trauma cases and participated in bone fixation workshops.

(PRESS RELEASE) SCOTLAND, 8-Aug-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Led by Dr David Russell and organised by Miss Victoria Kirkwood, the summer school aims to develop medical students’ clinical, basic surgical, and communication skills and apply them in the School’s simulation facilities. Students also see how basic science is applied to medical training whilst experiencing some of the newest areas of medicine.

As part of an extensive and exciting itinerary of workshops and tutorials including sessions at Clinical Skills, Centre for Anatomy & Human Identification, and Surgical Skills, the students from the Arab American University spent the afternoon of August 3rd discovering what the University Department of Orthopaedics (UDOTS) has to offer.

Professor Arpit Jariwala welcomed the students to UDOTS and highlighted some interesting, and at times rather gory, trauma cases. He was impressed with the extremely knowledgeable contributions of the students. Mr Sadiq Nasir then gave a demonstration of motion analysis techniques and systems in the Gait Analysis Lab.

Students were then split into four groups to participate in bone fixation workshops. Professor Jariwala was joined by his NHS Tayside colleagues, Orthopaedic Consultants, Mr Sankar Sripada, Mr Chris Donoghue, Dr Satish Puranik and Mr Dean Garland the trauma representative from DePuy Synthes who supplied the orthopaedic equipment for the workshop.

Refreshments for all, in the form of a pizza delivery, rounded off the afternoon.
