Evonik’s New Wetting Agents Improve Flow and Leveling Properties in Coatings

(IN BRIEF) Evonik’s Coating Additives Business Line has introduced two new wetting agents: TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296, that can be used for various substrates such as wood, plastic, and metal surfaces. These additives are designed to improve wetting and anti-cratering properties, enhance flow and leveling, and are particularly suitable for waterborne automotive and wood coatings. The launch of TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296 reinforces Evonik’s commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the coatings industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 21-Feb-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Evonik (ETR: EVK), one of the world leaders in specialty chemicals, announces that its Coating Additives Business Line has launched two new wetting agents: TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296. Both additives can be used on a variety of substrates, including wood, plastic, and metal surfaces, and have a range of applications, particularly in waterborne automotive and wood coatings. The new wetting agents improve wetting and anti-cratering properties and enhance flow and leveling, resulting in visually appealing coatings.

TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296 are well-suited for the automotive market, where the demand for glossy coatings with a unique color impression continues to grow. Wood coating manufacturers will also benefit from the excellent wood pore wetting properties that bring out the substrate’s structure particularly well, an essential feature for many end customers.

TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296 differ in their composition, with TEGO® Wet 290 consisting of 100% polyether-modified siloxane and being particularly suitable for formulations with low volatile content requirements. TEGO® Wet 296 is a 52% solution of a polyether-modified siloxane in DPM (dipropyleneglycol-methyl-ether) and works well in low solids formulations such as waterborne automotive basecoats.

The launch of TEGO® Wet 290 and TEGO® Wet 296 reinforces Evonik’s commitment to developing innovative and sustainable solutions for the coatings industry. These wetting agents will enhance the quality of coatings and meet the growing demand for visually appealing automotive and wood coatings.

“As a truly global partner to our coating customers, we are constantly working to expand our offering, to meet the evolving market and customer needs”, says Maximilian Morin, head of the Industrial & Transportation Coatings market segment. “With our two new wetting agents, we are trying to help satisfy the appearance requirements for automotive and wood furniture coatings.”

“TEGO® Wet 296, the diluted version of the additive, is easier to incorporate into the formulation,” explains Andreas Stüttgen, Manager Applied Research & Technology Transportation Coatings. Since overdosing can cause craters on the surface, it is less prone to defects, Stüttgen adds. “Our customers can also dilute the 100 percent version to the level they need, if necessary.”
