TEGO® Cycle: Evonik’s Breakthrough Additives for Energy-Efficient Plastic Recycling

(IN BRIEF) Evonik, a specialty chemicals company, has launched TEGO® Cycle, a range of additives aimed at improving the process and quality of recycled plastics. The additives save energy during mechanical recycling and enhance polymer properties, facilitating the transition to a circular plastics value chain. With global plastic waste becoming a pressing concern, Evonik’s portfolio helps convert plastic waste into reusable goods. The company will showcase the additives at the Plastics Recycling Show Europe and introduce its new TEGOMER® Polymer Processing Aids. For more information, visit Evonik’s website.

(PRESS RELEASE) ESSEN, 19-May-2023 — /EuropaWire/ —  Evonik (ETR: EVK), one of the world leaders in specialty chemicals, is proud to announce the launch of its comprehensive range of additives, TEGO® Cycle, aimed at helping customers optimize processes and improve the final quality of recycled plastics. The innovative TEGO® Cycle portfolio not only saves energy during the mechanical recycling process but also elevates polymer quality, facilitating the transformation of the plastics value chain into a sustainable ‘value cycle.’

Addressing the urgent need to combat plastic waste and secure the planet’s future, the global production of plastic has reached unprecedented levels. Since 1950, over ten billion tons of plastic have been produced, with more than half of that amount generated since 2000 alone. Approximately 400 million tons of plastic are added each year, with packaging materials accounting for nearly 40 percent of this volume. Regrettably, only a fraction of plastic waste is recycled, leading to vast quantities ending up in landfills, incinerators, or polluting the environment after just a single use.

“Despite recent improvements in plastic waste streams and better recycling infrastructure across the globe, the high costs and technical challenge of yielding polymers of high enough quality, have meant only around 100 million tons of plastic has been recycled so far,” said Alper Aksit, Marketing Manager Compounds & Circular Plastics Region EMEA. “Transforming plastic waste into valuable reusable plastic requires collaboration across the entire plastics value chain. Working closely with our partners and listening to our customers’ needs we have created initiatives like Evonik’s Circular Plastics Program, which combined with our TEGO® Cycle additives help speed up the plastic industry’s transformation into a fully circular economy.”

Evonik’s diverse range of additives is specifically formulated to address each stage of the mechanical recycling value chain, enabling the conversion of plastic waste into reusable plastic goods. During the wet stage, Evonik’s antifoams and wetting agents enhance the efficiency of washing, separation, deinking, and drying processes, significantly reducing energy consumption. Additionally, during the compounding (dry stage) phase, Evonik’s odor absorbers, compatibilizers, dispersants, and processing aids improve processing capabilities and enhance polymer properties, resulting in more cost-effective and higher-quality recycled plastic content.

To showcase its full array of additives designed to enhance the mechanical recycling process and improve the quality of plastics, Evonik will be present at booth #A12 during the Plastics Recycling Show Europe in Amsterdam from 10-11 May. In addition to highlighting the latest TEGO® Cycle products, Evonik will unveil its new TEGOMER® Polymer Processing Aids (PPA) based on organo-modified siloxane. These cutting-edge PPAs offer a compelling alternative to standard fluoroelastomer-based PPAs in PE and PP processing.
