(PRESS RELEASE) HILLSBOROUGH, 8-Dec-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, GRAHAM and CCL Solutions’ partnership demonstrates the positive impact effective structured collaboration has in the public sector. This was evidenced by the team recently winning an ICW Collaborative Working Award.

Working in partnership, North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, GRAHAM and CCL Solutions embedded ISO44001 collaborative practices and leadership to deliver a series of critical healthcare construction projects through the ProCure22/23 collaborative framework.

Aligned to a shared goal, the partnership achieved many benefits through adopting this collaborative approach:

    • Delivered over £75m of healthcare projects within challenging budgets and timescales to improve patient services and staff facilities. Projects included the completed Northern Centre for Cancer Care and West Cumberland Same Day Emergency Care (SDEC), West Cumberland Hospital Phase 2 redevelopment which is currently on site and the Workington Community Diagnostic Centre which is pre-construction.
    • Staff satisfaction doubled and patient satisfaction tripled at the new Northern Centre for Cancer Care, with waiting times and travel distances greatly reduced.
    • Met the objectives of two different NHS Trusts – North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Trust and Newcastle upon Tyne Hospitals NHS Foundation Trust.
    • Maintained critical hospital services while undertaking complex construction works within a live, PFI-operated, constrained environment and during Covid-19 pressures/restrictions.
    • Shared risk and opportunity between all parties on complex projects.
    • Integrated Modern Methods of Construction and Net Zero Carbon solutions to meet Government requirements.

The approach taken across this programme of work showcases the benefit of long-term collaborative relationships in the delivery of healthcare projects. It has provided savings to the public sector through reduced procurement costs, improved innovation through earlier contractor and supply chain engagement, and freed up staff time through increased trust. It clearly demonstrates Construction Playbook principles in practice, serving as a case study for delivering future capital projects.

Keith Hayes, National Framework Director for GRAHAM’s Building division, said: “Exemplar collaboration is key for NHS service delivery and staff facility improvements. We are proud that this partnership showcases the value of collaborative working in action and demonstrates what powerful outcomes can be achieved in the public sector by working together.”

Stephen Prince, Associate Director of Estates and Facilities at North Cumbria Integrated Care NHS Foundation Trust, commented: “We’re delighted to have received this prestigious award alongside GRAHAM and CCL, recognising the highly collaborative approach embedded into delivery of these critical healthcare projects. Collaboration has been fundamental to our approach across the whole team and its success is evidenced by the positive outcomes achieved for patients, staff and the local community in Cumbria.”
