(IN BRIEF) GRAHAM has been shortlisted for the MMC Project of the Year Award in the Construction News Awards 2023 for its Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) project at the University of York. The project, completed in September 2022, utilised Modern Methods of Construction (MMC) and achieved positive sustainability improvements, exemplary health & safety and social value records, programme savings, cost control, and high client satisfaction. The award recognises a construction team that has delivered a high standard of work and achieved excellent client satisfaction through the use of alternative construction practices. The University of York project is a finalist in the MMC Project of the Year Award category, which celebrates the best use of MMC in the UK construction industry.

(PRESS RELEASE) HILLSBOROUGH, 4-Apr-2023 — /EuropaWire/ — Completed in September 2022, our Purpose Built Student Accommodation (PBSA) development at the University of York is what GRAHAM considers to be a masterclass in construction embracing Modern Methods of Construction (MMC). With a GIFA of over 40,000m2, this project was a significant challenge which our team overcame.

Completing 1,480 bedrooms with positive sustainability improvements, exemplary health & safety and social value records, programme savings, cost control and a delighted client is no mean feat – but is exactly what our highly skilled team, innovative MMC and collaboration achieved.

The award will recognise a construction team which has delivered a high standard of work, adhered to budget and achieved excellent client satisfaction through the utilisation of alternative construction practices. We believe this reflects our University of York team perfectly!

This category celebrates the best uses of Modern Methods of Construction across the UK’s competitive construction industry, so to be shortlisted is a proud achievement for GRAHAM.

Neil McFarlane, Strategic Development Director, said:

“To be shortlisted for the MMC Project of the Year Award is an excellent achievement for a team who truly went above and beyond to exceed client expectations and deliver an exceptional project.

“We completed our works on time, delivered an additional phase 9 months ahead of schedule, and maintained an exemplary safety record throughout. The University of York team are absolutely delighted with their facilities and the high quality handed over. All of this was no easy task, and so many talented and dedicated people played a part in the success of the project. To have this recognised has been uplifting for the GRAHAM team.”

Gary Holmes, Regional Managing Director for GRAHAM’s Building North region, added:

“Our University of York PBSA development was a project which many members of the team – both from GRAHAM and our supply chain – considered to be one of the best they had been part of.

Modern Methods of Construction were essential for this project given its size and complexity. When delivering 1,480 beds in such a short space of time the only way to move forward is to try to offsite manufacture. To meet deadlines and to meet costs, alongside safety and quality, MMC is becoming more and more important – but for this project it was key for the delivery.

“Well done to everyone involved in delivering a project receiving national recognition. The accolade would be well deserved given the commitment from our team and the exceptional quality delivered, but to even be shortlisted has brought great pride.”

The winner will be announced at the Construction News Awards ceremony on 13th July 2023 at JW Marriott Grosvenor House London.
