ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG Selects AFRY for Supervision Services on Vienna-Gmünd Rail Modernisation

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has been commissioned by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG to provide site supervision and construction oversight services for the modernisation of Austria’s Franz-Josefs-Bahn. The railway corridor connects Vienna with northern Austria and the Czech border and is part of a broader investment programme to upgrade rail infrastructure between Vienna and Gmünd. The modernisation programme includes improvements to tracks, overhead line systems, supporting infrastructure, stations and other rail assets. (PRESS RELEASE) SOLNA, 10-Jul-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has been commissioned by ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG to support the modernisation of the Franz-Josefs-Bahn, an important rail corridor in Austria connecting Vienna with the country’s northern region and the Czech border.

The assignment forms part of a wider infrastructure investment programme focused on upgrading the railway between Vienna and Gmünd. The programme aims to improve capacity, reliability and overall service quality for both passenger and freight transport.

The Franz-Josefs-Bahn is undergoing a long-term modernisation process intended to strengthen its role as a modern and efficient transport link. The works include upgrades to tracks, overhead line systems and supporting infrastructure, alongside targeted improvements to stations and other rail assets.

These measures are designed to enhance operational reliability, increase the line’s capacity and improve the travel and transport experience for passengers and freight customers.

Friedrich Dallhammer, Project Manager Construction Technology at ÖBB-Infrastruktur AG, said the project represents an important step in improving rail infrastructure and service quality.

Under the contract, AFRY is responsible for site supervision and construction oversight. Its role includes quality assurance, contract and schedule management, project management and billing.

Through these services, AFRY will help ensure the efficient and high-quality delivery of infrastructure upgrades across key sections of the line.
