Romanian Businesses to Gain New Financing Through EIB and BRD Sogelease Partnership

(IN BRIEF) The European Investment Bank is lending €100 million to BRD Sogelease IFN SA, the leasing subsidiary of BRD Groupe Société Générale, to expand financing for SMEs and Mid-Caps in Romania. The credit line will support business expansion, productivity improvements, innovation and sustainable development, with funding available in euros or Romanian lei under favourable conditions. Around 80 percent of the loan is expected to support investments in Romania’s less developed cohesion regions, while 15 percent is earmarked for green projects such as energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable transport. The new financing builds on a decade-long relationship between the EIB and BRD Sogelease, during which previous EIB loans to the company have totalled €305 million.

(PRESS RELEASE) LUXEMBOURG, 7-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — The European Investment Bank is providing €100 million in financing to BRD Sogelease IFN SA, the leasing subsidiary of BRD Groupe Société Générale, to expand access to funding for businesses across Romania.

The credit line will support small and medium-sized enterprises and Mid-Caps seeking to invest in growth, productivity improvements and sustainable development.

The financing is intended to help Romanian companies access longer-term funding on favourable terms, at a time when SMEs and Mid-Caps in Romania continue to face greater challenges in obtaining long-term finance than similar businesses in many other European Union countries.

The EIB loan will enable BRD Sogelease to provide financing in either euros or Romanian lei under conditions expected to be more attractive than comparable market alternatives.

Around 80 percent of the loan is expected to be deployed in less developed areas, referred to in the European Union as cohesion regions.

This focus is intended to support economic and social development across Romania and help unlock investment in areas where access to finance remains particularly important.

In addition, 15 percent of the financing has been earmarked for green projects.

Eligible investments may include energy efficiency, renewable energy and sustainable transport projects.

The operation reflects the EIB’s broader objective of supporting competitiveness, regional development and the green transition through partnerships with financial institutions.

Ioannis Tsakiris, Vice-President of the European Investment Bank, said access to finance is an important driver of competitiveness in today’s rapidly changing economy.

He said the partnership with BRD Sogelease will mobilise investment where it is most needed, particularly among Romanian entrepreneurs.

Tsakiris added that the financing will help businesses become more resilient, more innovative and better prepared for future opportunities.

Gabriel Mihai, General Manager of BRD Sogelease, said the long-standing partnership with the EIB reflects a shared commitment to supporting the growth and resilience of the Romanian economy.

He said the new financing facility will allow BRD Sogelease to provide SMEs and Mid-Caps with improved access to long-term funding on attractive terms.

Mihai said the funding will help companies invest in expansion, innovation, productivity and sustainable development.

He added that cooperation with the EIB strengthens BRD Sogelease’s capacity to support businesses across Romania, especially in cohesion regions where access to financing is essential for unlocking economic potential.

Mihai said BRD Sogelease remains committed to supporting local entrepreneurs and companies with financial solutions that help them grow, adapt and contribute to Romania’s long-term prosperity.

He also noted that this support forms a key part of BRD Group’s financial solutions offering in Romania.

The new operation builds on previous EIB lending to BRD Sogelease IFN, which has totalled €305 million over the past decade.

During this period, the EIB has also provided advisory support on green investments to BRD Sogelease IFN and its clients.

Through the new €100 million credit line, the EIB and BRD Sogelease aim to strengthen financing for Romanian businesses, support investment in less developed regions and accelerate projects linked to sustainability and the green economy.
