AFRY Secures Key Design Role for Cavezzolo Viaduct in Lugano Tram Train Infrastructure Project

(IN BRIEF) AFRY has been awarded a contract, as part of a consortium with Bänziger Partner AG, to deliver the detailed design of the Cavezzolo Viaduct for the Lugano Tram-Train network in Switzerland. The project is a key element of a broader initiative to improve regional transport connectivity by linking Lugano’s city centre with surrounding areas through a modern, high-capacity system. The viaduct will serve both functional and architectural roles, supporting sustainable urban development and reduced travel times. Scheduled to run from 2026 to 2035, the project reinforces AFRY’s position in delivering complex infrastructure and sustainable mobility solutions in Switzerland.

(PRESS RELEASE) STOCKHOLM, 15-Apr-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — AFRY has been selected, as part of a consortium, to carry out the detailed design of the Cavezzolo Viaduct, a key infrastructure component of the future Lugano Tram-Train network in Switzerland. The contract further strengthens AFRY’s role in advancing sustainable mobility and transport infrastructure within the region.

Working alongside Bänziger Partner AG under the “Consorzio AB” partnership, AFRY will lead the design of the viaduct, which is a central element of the Rete Tram-Treno del Luganese. This project follows the earlier strategic planning phase of the tram-train system, which is intended to connect Lugano’s urban centre with surrounding valleys through an efficient and high-capacity public transport network.

The Cavezzolo Viaduct is expected to serve both as a functional transport link and an architectural feature within the broader infrastructure programme. It will contribute to improved regional accessibility, shorter travel times, and the promotion of sustainable urban development across the Lugano area.

Marcel Winter, Head of Segment Road and Rail at AFRY, highlighted the importance of the project, describing the viaduct as a key component of a transformative mobility initiative that will reshape transportation in the region. He emphasised AFRY’s commitment to delivering complex engineering solutions and contributing multidisciplinary expertise to projects that generate long-term benefits for communities and passengers.

The viaduct will form part of a wider integrated mobility corridor, working in conjunction with the nearby Breganzona tunnel, where AFRY is already involved. Together, these elements will support a cohesive transport system designed to enhance connectivity and efficiency.

Project work is scheduled to take place between 2026 and 2035, with completion targeted for 2035. The estimated value of the contract for AFRY is approximately 18 million Swedish kronor.
