Lemminkäinen to use PPP model to build two schools in Kuopio, Finland

HELSINKI, 01-Feb-2016 — /EuropaWire/ — Lemminkäinen will build two schools in Kuopio, in Eastern Finland, with the PPP model. The contract includes the construction of the Jynkkä primary school and the Karttula twelve-year school and day-care centre as well as libraries located in the same complex with the schools. The construction of the Jynkkä school will begin in January 2016, and the school is scheduled to be ready for use in June 2017. The construction of the Karttula twelve-year school will begin in May 2016, and the school is scheduled for completion in September 2018. The total value of the projects is approximately EUR 42 million.

The contract includes the design and construction of the buildings. Lemminkäinen will also be liable for the buildings’ maintenance, upkeep, user services and basic renovation investments during the service contract for the service period of 20 years.

The Jynkkä school will accommodate 540 pupils, with a total gross area of 5,166 square metres. The Karttula twelve-year school will accommodate 270 pupils and the day-care centre 40 children. The Karttula school and day-care centre will have a total gross area of 6,380 square metres.

“We will create a functional centre in the school area that, not only serves the pupils and teachers, but also the neighbourhood’s residents, says Pauli Mäkelä, Executive Vice President, Building construction, Finland.

“The PPP model is economically advantageous for the city both in terms of investment and utility costs. The facilities will be constructed to our needs. In designing them, consideration was given to the size of the teaching groups, diverse use and the pedagogic needs of the new curriculum,” says Veli-Matti Paananen, Construction Developer, Facility Management, City of Kuopio.

Lemminkäinen is currently building schools in Hollola, Porvoo and Pudasjärvi as well using the PPP model. The same model is also used for a care facility that is presently under construction in Pudasjärvi. Over the past few years, Lemminkäinen has also completed PPP construction projects in Oulu and Kuopio.
