SOCAR Midstream Gas Operations Selects Wood Nobel Energy for Nakhchivan Thermal Power Project

(IN BRIEF) Wood Nobel Energy has been awarded the front-end engineering design contract for the Nakhchivan Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant in Azerbaijan. The project, selected by SOCAR Midstream Gas Operations, will support increased electricity generation and export capacity in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic. The plant will use a more efficient configuration than conventional power plants by capturing and reusing waste heat, and it is being designed with future expansion in mind. (PRESS RELEASE) ABERDEEN, 11-Aug-2026 — /EuropaWire/ — Wood Nobel Energy has secured the front-end engineering design contract for the Nakhchivan Combined Cycle Thermal Power Plant, a major power infrastructure project in Azerbaijan’s Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The project is intended to strengthen electricity generation and export capacity in the region.

Wood Nobel Energy was selected by SOCAR Midstream Gas Operations to deliver the FEED scope, which will define the project’s technical design and execution approach.

The work will provide the foundation for the next phase of the project, including engineering, procurement and construction.

The new thermal power plant will use a more efficient configuration than conventional power plants by capturing and reusing waste heat that would otherwise be lost.

The facility is also being designed with future expansion in mind, supporting long-term development of power generation capacity in Nakhchivan.

The project is being developed under Order of the President of the Republic of Azerbaijan No. 418, dated 23 December 2024, which sets out measures related to the construction of a new thermal power plant in the Nakhchivan Autonomous Republic.

The order supports plans to increase both electricity generation and export capacity in the region.

Wood Nobel Energy combines Wood’s global engineering, power and energy infrastructure expertise with Nobel Energy’s local knowledge, workforce and supply chain capabilities in Azerbaijan.

The joint venture is designed to deliver high-quality engineering in-country while drawing on international technical standards and specialist expertise where required.

The power plant will be located on a site that benefits from existing and planned infrastructure.

This is expected to reduce project complexity and support efficient delivery.

Orkhan Ismayilov, Director of Wood Azerbaijan, said the contract is an important addition to Wood’s growing portfolio in Azerbaijan.
