Derby, United Kingdom, 01-10-2013 — /EuropaWire/ — GRAHAM Construction workers at the Rolls-Royce site in Derby are being provided with a fleet of recycled bikes to get around the site, allowing them on tracks where cars and other vehicles cannot go.
Life Cycle UK’s Bike Back Derby recycling scheme works with prisoners and teaches them skills in cycle mechanics. Once refurbished and checked by a mechanic, the bikes are sold at affordable prices.
Jon Hughes, project manager of Bike Back Derby, said: “I love that GRAHAM Construction are finding innovative ways of working more effectively, efficiently and environmentally.”
Councillor Asaf Afzal, cabinet member for planning at Derby City Council, said: “Almost everyone has an unused bike in their garage or shed and the fact that these bikes can be recycled has massive advantages.
“I welcome the reduction in congestion and pollution and look forward to seeing more people moving around Derby sustainably.”
Since April 2013, 84 bikes have been donated to the scheme, of which 70 recycled bikes have been made available to buy.
