ABP Champions Environmental Stewardship in Great British Spring Cleanup 2024

(IN BRIEF) Associated British Ports (ABP) actively participated in the Great British Spring Clean 2024, an extensive environmental campaign organized by Keep Britain Tidy. ABP employees volunteered to collect litter at Ports of Immingham, Grimsby, and Hull, amassing over 40 bags of waste including plastic bags, bottles, and tin cans. While ABP already employs external services for regular port maintenance, the additional cleanup targeted public spaces to prevent litter from contaminating waterways. Simon Bird, ABP’s Regional Director for the Humber ports, emphasized the importance of such initiatives in alignment with ABP’s sustainability strategy, particularly focusing on biodiversity preservation. Additionally, tenants like Grimsby Seafood Village directors Pete Dalton and Gary Cadey have been actively engaged in monthly cleanup efforts, underscoring a shared commitment to environmental stewardship within the port communities.

(PRESS RELEASE) LONDON, 26-Mar-2024 — /EuropaWire/ — Associated British Ports (ABP) took part in the Great British Spring Clean 2024, the nation’s biggest mass-action environmental campaign, now in its ninth year, and led by Keep Britain Tidy.

ABP colleagues volunteered and pledged to pick at the Ports of Immingham, Grimsby and Hull. Armed with litter pickers and bin bags the teams collected over 40 bags of litter. All manner of items were removed from the port estate and its public spaces, such as plastic bags, bottles, tin cans and disposable cups.

While ABP contracts an external company to keep the ports clean and tidy across the year, the extra effort in spaces used by the public was welcomed, ensuring litter does not make its way into waterways where it accumulates and becomes an issue for wildlife and the environment.

Simon Bird, Regional Director for the Humber ABP ports said: “Keeping the ports’ estate tidy is vital to delivering our operations here on the Humber. ABP’s Ready for Tomorrow sustainability strategy includes biodiversity as one of its five key themes, seeking to protect and enhance terrestrial and marine habitats where possible.

It is heartening to see our colleagues here on the Humber volunteering their time to support our ongoing effort to tackle litter and I’d like to extend my huge thanks to them for their efforts over the Great British Spring Clean.”

Over at our Port of Grimsby we celebrate the hard work our tenants from the Grimsby Seafood Village have carried out in the last 12 years keeping the North Wall tidy. Pete Dalton and Gary Cadey, directors of the multi-million-pound site, have always taken a pride in keeping the area surrounding their site tidy.

Pete Dalton added: “We litter pick the North Wall monthly because there are always discarded beer cans and other rubbish dumped there. We usually collect two to three bin liners a month of items that have been discarded by people.

“Our site managers keep on top of it too, as we’re proud to keep everything clean and tidy. We recycle a lot of waste too. Over 70 tonnes of polystyrene, over 12 tonnes of cardboard and 19 tonnes of polythene and that’s an achievement we’re also proud of.”
