Fife, Scotland, 28-12-2015 — /EuropaWire/ — A trio of academics from the University of St Andrews have been awarded top research grants from a national funding body.
Dr Karen Spencer (School of Psychology and Neuroscience) and Dr Nicola Allison (School of Geography and Geosciences) were awarded £169,500 and £108,000 respectively in the latest round of awards from the Philip Leverhulme Trust.
Meanwhile Dr Rebecca Sweetman, a lecturer in the School of Classics, was awarded the prestigious Philip Leverhulme Trust Major Fellowship.
Dr Sweetman was awarded £100,000 for her project ‘The Roman and Late Antique Cyclades: Networks, Economy and Religion’. The funding will allow Dr Sweetman to undertake two years research leave, allowing her to pursue a study of the Cyclades in the Roman and Late Antique periods.
The research will cross the traditional divide that has separated the two periods and will examine the material from both local and non-local perspectives. In addition to offering an overview of the islands, it will also contribute to our understanding of broader questions about the nature of provinces in the Roman Empire and Christianization processes in the Eastern Mediterranean
The Philip Leverhulme awards recognise the achievement of outstanding researchers who have made a substantial international contribution to their particular field and whose future shows great promise.
