1-11-2012 — /europawire.eu/ — Today, the President of the Generalitat Valenciana, Alberto Fabra, and the delegate for the Government, Paula Sánchez de León, along with the Chairman of Red Eléctrica de España, José Folgado, have visited the Morvedre converter station in Sagunto, one of the essential facilities of the electricity interconnection between the Spanish peninsula and the Balearic Islands.
This 400 kV facility covering a total surface area of 15,000 square metres is, together with the converter station in Santa Ponsa in Majorca, the first of its type built in Spain. The Rómulo Project is, in turn, the first electricity interconnection project in direct current to be carried out in Spain.
The Morvedre converter station, together with its Santa Ponsa counterpart, transforms the direct current used by the submarine link into alternating current, which is the type of current used by the electricity systems on the both the Peninsula and the Balearic Islands. The converter stations and the interconnection cable have been designed in accordance to the principle that ensures that all the equipment counts on back-up systems, thus ensuring maximum availability.
Since August, all the Rómulo Project facilities are fully operational, which will help achieve the objectives of this project which is to supply around 25% of electricity consumed in the Balearic Islands and thereby increase the quality and security of supply, as well as to integrate the Balearic Islands’ electricity system into the Iberian Electricity Market, which will represent savings for the Spanish electricity system as a whole.
